  • Simply put, credibility means trust. As a writer, your credibility is what tells your audience that you’re trustworthy. Establishing your credibility is essential for any kind of writing. If you are a creative writer, can your audience trust you to deliver a well-crafted story? If you are a business writer, how can you let your audience know you are an expert in your field?
.
One thing to note is that while, yes, big writing mistakes like using clichés, overgeneralizing/using biased language, or having terrible grammar and typos, will make you untrustworthy to your audience, often your audience won’t know why they choose to trust one writer over another, they just have a feeling. .
So even if your sentences are grammatically fine, and, “correct,” you still may be turning off your audience without even realizing it.
.

  • Posting my first video blog post was way more nerve wracking than I anticipated. After all, when you claim to be an expert in something, that claim leaves little room for error, right?
.
In creative writing class, we learn to “kill our darlings,” to not be so attached to a phrase or character or plot-line that we let it ruin an otherwise great story. It’s far more comfortable to critique someone else’s work, to be the hit man for their darlings.
.
In yoga, we learn that we are always students. You don’t win at yoga once you can do all the poses, or have gone to the most trainings. In yoga, there is always more to learn, always a little deeper to explore, always more balance to find.
.
Teaching is both being that objective eye for my students, and being a student along-side, learning, inspiring, and being inspired. In teaching, we find a balance between strictness and softness, and we learn that we’re not always right or perfect, and that’s ok.
.
Head over to sayitwithsara.com (link in bio) to catch my first free mini lesson on the five writing mistakes that could be costing you your credibility. While you’re there, sign up for my email list to stay updated on new online courses coming in 2020!

  • I’ve spent the past three days learning how to use #mindbody like a boss and leveling up my business know-how.
.
We hear the phrase “mind body” all the time, but how much do we really think about what it means?
.
More and more, I think people are starting to realize how the physical impacts the mental and vice-versa, yet how many of us are still stuck in this jock vs. nerd mentality?
.
I know that for me, having a regular yoga and Pilates practice has improved my mental state by leaps and bounds, and yet a part of me still thinks I’m either a “fitness girl,” or I have to be sitting in a Parisian attic swilling gin and smoking cigarettes to call myself a real writer. Who says you have to choose?
.
I know we can do better. I know it’s possible to be healthy and happy and creative and great at whatever we put our minds to.
.
I think we can run businesses, and write songs and novels, and work out regularly, and eat well, and be kind.
.
So I am grateful to get this training at #mindbodyuniversity, not only as a yoga studio manager, but also as a teacher, and a writer, and a new business owner. All knowledge is worth it. Anything we learn can help us in different aspects of our rich and varied lives.
.
If you’ve made it to the end of this long-winded post, tell me your favorite body/mind practices, below. And stay tuned for some new local and online workshop and courses coming soon...❤️

  • #testimonialtuesday. What can you achieve with the support of a strong community?
.
I was an extremely competitive kid. I wanted to be the best at everything. In ballet class, I would focus on the person I thought was the best in class, and try to kick my leg higher, or point my toes more than her. I always had to read the most books in school, or win the talent show, etc. When I would “lose” (which one inevitably does when trying to be the “best” at everything), it would be devastating.
.
All of this early competitiveness and over-achieving just led to severe teenage/20s burn-out. I spent many of my young adult years feeling isolated, depressed, and self-destructive. I watched friends achieve their goals and become successful, and I tried to be happy for them, but inwardly felt like a total loser.
.
One of the great lessons of my life, so far, has been to un-learn this destructive, competitive nature. .
It’s a vulnerable thing to ask for help, but it’s what creates connection and community, which, to me, is the opposite of destructive competition.
.
By asking for help, and helping others find success, I have achieved far more than I ever did trying to be “the best.” The beauty of this is, I no longer care if I can kick my leg higher, or read more books, or get more Instagram likes than my neighbor. I’m not in competition with those around me; I am working towards being the kindest, most authentic version of myself.

How has a supportive community improved your life, and how can you be of service to those around you? Comment below ❤️

  • I’ve been on a little road trip that, unintentionally, followed a literary trail. First, San Francisco where we visited the famed City Lights Book Store where beats once gathered.
.
In Half Moon Bay, we witnessed a wedding between two poets who asked their poet friends to join in their ceremony. The result, a love song just for them.
.
In Big Sur we visited places Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac used to go. We took in that glorious, ragged coast that once inspired them, and maybe could inspire us. .
And now in Santa Barbara, my home town, I find myself mulling on what it means to write in this era of social media and listed tidbits of information ingested in 30 second bites. This post isn’t meant to lament the loss of the past. Art always evolves.
.
How it evolves, I believe, is up to us. How can we use our modern medium to create something genuine, perhaps something thought provoking, or subversive? How can we use language to create an awareness shift, a movement away from sarcastic memes and gifs to mask our feelings, and a move towards vulnerability? Tell me your thoughts below. 🖤

  • Passive vs. Active voice: What the hell does this actually mean?
.
Most writers and teachers (including Stephen King in his book On Writing) will tell you to write in active voice 99% of the time. They’re right.
.
Writers often slip into passive voice when trying to sound more formal or “official,” but the end result can become awkward and unclear. One of the few times it is appropriate to use passive voice is when trying to soften bad news, like the examples, below.
.
Passive Voice Example: Your electricity has been turned off due to non payment (by zombies).
.
Active Voice Example: Con Ed has turned off your electricity because you (zombies) did not pay your bill.
.
Note how in the first example, nobody specific is “doing” the action, the action is being done to the object. In the second example, Con Ed is front and center turning off your electricity because those damn zombies didn’t pay like they said they would.
.
So check yourself. Do you notice yourself frequently slipping into passive voice, especially when attempting a more formal style?
.
Understanding and practicing the difference between active and passive voice will help you become a clearer, stronger writer. Make your voice heard in the best way! ❤️
