I was so conflicted about today, which sucks. This heaviness many times only ours, which sucks.
I’m an American by choice, a unique privilege, and I believe in the beauty and promise of this country and with that I feel great pride... proud to be a Jah-Merican.
Then our worlds were ROCKED, again, and we were confronted with the harsh realities of just how different it is to be a BLACK AMERICAN. I asked friends and family, born Americans, as we approached the 4th if they were proud to be BLACK AMERICANS and most said they were proud to be black but not American 💔.
My son is a born American and I want him to be proud of his blackness and his country. I want him to love the space he occupies and feel rooted and connected. It’s gonna take a lot of work for us to get there... but we MUST!
What does this day mean to you? Has it changed? I love hearing all your opinions and experiences. It grants everyone that reads it deeper understanding and greater empathy. #BlackAmerican #July4th @mommination
I know... me, FIT•ish?!? Yup.
Things and times have changed and I have so much empathy for all the mommies out there who struggle getting it all done while staying on top of their fitness journey. So I am officially the captain of the #FitishMommi team for the @mommination #FitMommiChallenge. Our Dad’s amazing... his loves as infinite as the ocean! There’s nothing we ever ask that’s too big or too small. He answers every call and has given us the confidence to scale every mountain. I love you so much Daddy! I’m so very blessed to be your daughter. Happy Father’s Day. 😘😘😘 #DadsareEssential
I’ve ALWAYS known what it means to have an amazing Father, my dad set the bar soooo high, but I’ve never seen a father develop from this vantage point. @rossboy31 you continue to amaze me as you grow every single day into the most incredible father our son could ever have. You’re thoughtful, patient, loving, nurturing, kind, fun and PRESENT! Deucey tells you everyday how much he loves you so today I’ll just write it for him! We love you babe!!! Happy Father’s Day, love Deucey and Mommi #DadsAreEssential #HappyFathersDay
I wasn’t there on June 19th 1865 when the slaves in Galveston found out they were finally free. (Two years after the Emancipation Proclamation)
On the heels of the most horrifying time of their lives there had finally come a finish line, a win, the realization of their greatest dream and 155 years later there is something about this time, this season that I imagine feels similar.
There has been an awakening in so many people, a realization that what some thought was left behind in 1865, is as alive today, as it was then. I’ve had conversations with people, on platforms and in spaces I NEVER thought possible. I’ve seen allies from every race join this fight and I KNOW this painful time, once again, will change the world for the better!
So today, like my ancestors did, I celebrate the wins, the progress, OUR STORY because it’s what inspires us all to keep fighting! Happy Juneteenth everybody. .
I was inspired to make these tees to commemorate these two significant years and hundreds of you supported! THANK YOU! I’ve created this limited edition gold version as a keepsake. @mommination
#Juneteenth #BlackFamilies #Love #BlackHistory
As we all continue to do our own work to make this world a better place, I’ve been focused on learning the history of Africans in America and was inspired by the Juneteenth celebrations to understand more deeply why it’s so important.
Most people think ALL slaves were free after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 but they weren’t. Slaves here in Texas weren’t made free until June 19th, 1865. TWO YEARS LATER!
This is cause for a celebration and reflection...
We’re STILL FIGHTING
