  • Unfortunately we couldn’t get a stable connection for the whole hour, so I’ll call this part one of my conversation with man, the myth, the legend @drjohncarlos1968 - I’ll conclude the conversation and post it soon.

  • I’m so #trackandfield that when @adidasrunning told me 20 years ago that I was shooting an ad with the great “Lee Evans”, I just assumed it was the @sjsu alum/1968 olympic gold medalist and former 400m dash world-record holder.
Turns out, it was the hilarious actor/comedian Lee Evans, who most will remember from the box-office hit “There’s something about Mary”. I’d pay good money to see the outtakes from this shoot.
We had way too much fun in Australia making this.

  • #tbt 20 years ago, we shot this ad, in the city where my sprinting ability was discovered - NEW YORK.

My only memories of this shoot are that it took about 100 all-out-sprinting takes to get all the ‘pursuit’ shots, and that so many of the extras had appeared in “Goodfellas” which is in my top 5 movies of all time.

From the DP,
@julianwhatleyiv: “The first take when I saw world-class sprinter Ato Boldon streak through frame I couldn't believe my eyes. It was real life but looked fake, like someone had hit the fast-forward button. I've now worked with a few dozen top professional athletes as a DP, but I never get over how incredible they are.

This spot, one in a series I got to shoot with the amazing Frederik Bond, was nearly impossible logistically. The location is on a bustling commercial street in one of those textured Brooklyn neighborhoods, beneath a station at the intersection of two elevated train lines, near two emergency hospitals. Subway trains thundering overhead and sirens screaming, the noise could be deafening. Our permit only allowed us to hold traffic for sixty seconds at a time. We tracked at top speed to match Boldon’s pace along bumpy sidewalks with me sprawled across the front of a jury-rigged ATV clinging to an under-slung Lamda head, veering between steel beams and parked cars. Somehow, out of the chaos emerged an enduring piece of filmmaking.”
