Heading out to shop for food. Wearing a mask because it is the right thing to do. It protects me and it protects all of us. Thanks to @chknfeed for crafting this fancy mask for me. WEAR A MASK.
Phase 2 has begun in NYC, which means socially distant outdoor dining. This was our first out-of-the-apartment meal in over 3 1/2 months, and it was an excellent one, at our neighborhood favorite, @vicsnewyork (We wore masks to and from the restaurant.) Stay safe, everyone. Be inspired by how well NYC has wound up containing COVID-19, but don’t get complacent.
And the most recent 5-star reads I’ve devoured are: #NobelPrize winning author #OlgaTokarczuk ‘s brilliantly observed portrait of an eccentric elderly Polish woman (with one of the best-ever titles) #DriveYourPlowOvertheBonesoftheDead ; the @pulitzerprizes winning #AVisitfromtheGoonSquad by #JenniferEgan — an incisively written, deeply compassionate mosaic novel about a wonderfully complicated and varied cast of damaged and humanely rendered characters; and finally, the novel that affected me the most powerfully of all the other wonderful books I’ve read this year: #TheGreatBelievers by @rebeccamakkai — it floored me with its directness, its open heart, and its beautifully constructed portrait of people who lived through, and died through, the early days of the AIDS crisis. #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #awardwinningnovels #quarantinereads #quarantinereading
Next up are the classic #TheGreatGatsby by #FScottFitzgerald — which deserves every shred of its stellar reputation; the @hugoawards winner #Cyteen by the incredibly prolific and mesmerizingly talented #CJCherryh — a densely absorbing exploration of the effects and ethics of cloning on a society and its citizens; and the #NationalBookAward nominated #BlackLeopardRedWolf by #MarlonJames — an unapologetically queer, hallucinatory, intensely violent fever dream of a novel. #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #awardwinningnovels #quarantinereads #quarantinereading
Next up in my sharing of 5-star reads is the classic #TheSpyWhoCameInFromtheCold by #JohnLeCarré — which is rightfully credited with being at the pinnacle of spy literature; #NewsoftheWorld by #PauletteJiles — which features one of the most believable evolutions of a non-romantic relationship I’ve ever encountered in a novel; and the @hugoawards & #NebulaAward winning #TheWindupGirl by #PaoloBacigalupi — an incredibly intense portrait of a group of people struggling to survive in a near-future Thailand. #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #quarantinereads #quarantinereading #awardwinningnovels
In honor of the reading I’ve been doing during the lockdown, I wanted to highlight the best books I’ve encountered in these last couple of months, in chronological order of finishing them. I recommend each and every one of them to people who are looking for richly human, complex, enthralling novels. First up, 2019 #NationalBookAward winner #TrustExercise by #SusanChoi — an incredibly inventive exploration of the scars of teenage misadventures; #nationalbookcriticscircleawardwinner #Americanah — @chimamanda_adichie ‘s amazingly trenchant and humane portrait of a couple of young Nigerians who experience life inside and outside their home country; and the @hugoawards & #NebulaAward winning #AmongOthers — which features one of the most convincingly-drawn first person voices I’ve ever encountered, and which moved me to my core. #bookstagram #awardwinningnovels #literature #quarantinereading
Father and son.
Happy Mother’s Day. I miss her a whole lot. Thanks to my brother @kidsandwolves for finding and posting this picture.
24 years ago today, Rent opened on Broadway. This photo of the original cast was taken for @pozmagazine — a publication serving the HIV-positive community. Now, in the midst of another plague, Rent’s central message of “No Day But Today” is as resonant as ever. Stay safe.
Tribute to @hamiltonmusical starring the Bond Street Kitties
Already posted this on Twitter but wanted to post here as well. And no, that’s not a tribble. Oh, and by the way, please #StayHomeSaveLives
