  • If you were to write a fairytale retelling, which fairytale would you choose?

Today's prompt for the #writingcommunitychallenge asks my favorite writing resources and I would like to shout out Tomi Adeyemi's 'Writer's Roadmap' course! It's really done for me what no writer resource has done before: made me create an entire outline from scratch 😅 So, for any pantsers out there like me (and planners as well of course 😊), I cannot recommend this course enough!

The #fantasychallengeaugust asks for my favorite retelling and I have to admit I still have many, many, many retellings sitting on my TBR that I still need to read 🙈

However, an oldie but goodie for me is Gail Carson Levine's 'Ella Enchanted 😊

"It is helpful to know the proper way to behave, so one can decide whether or not to be proper."

And a less oldie, but also one I really enjoyed is Marissa Meyer's Winter 😄

"She was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken."

  • ✏️✏️✏️Our Kids might be with us homeschooling or distance learning... but one thing is the same... those little kiddos all have to have a “work space”
✏️✏️✏️
From kitchen tables, converted closets or maybe even a garage turned classroom; we are all getting creative !

What do you do at home for your children’s school space? Kitchen table? Desk? All color coordinated or simple ?

  • Wednesday Wisdom: I think intersectional community asks us to be open and mindful of difference. It asks us to have a posture of listening that requires a lot of effort, it requires a lot of heart, it requires a lot of humility in many ways. Because we are being asked to really give attention to another person’s experience that we might not have any relationship with. This is a crucial point of connection for me because if we are artists or writers, what we really want is to connect with people.” —Jasmine Gui

  • The first line fiasco... you almost always end up changing them once you finish the book, but without one, you can’t start.
.
Our tip is to use a first line generator or list of first line ideas to spark ideas when you’re beginning your next project.
.
The best thing about a first line generator and first line ideas is they can work to give you new ideas in almost any genre. Your first line does need to set the tone and expectations for what’s to come, but a first line for a romance could spark an amazing thriller idea in your mind.
.
To help get the creative juices flowing, our latest blog suggests 30 first line ideas to hook both the reader and writer! Read it at self-publishinghero.com or click the link in our bio to find out more about our course 👍

  • From our Bestseller Academy FAQs...

Is the Bestseller Academy a course, coaching or mentorship program?

It's all three. The Writer's Roadmap guides you in writing your novel. Each month you have two live group coaching sessions a month on Craft and Life Coaching for Writers. You also get peer support for everything from beta readers, book covers, opening lines, blurb, first pages and chapters. Plus access to all the Academy's resources, tools and materials.

Is the Bestseller Academy community the BXP Team?
No - The Academy Community is a dedicated community where you get peer support on your plots, pitches, book covers, opening lines, blurb, first pages and chapters... and that's just for starters. It is a private, non-Facebook group.

Is it for new novelists or published authors?
Both. We've created a Choose Your Own Adventure depending on where you are on your author's journey. If you want to be a better writer and want your next book to be your best, join The Bestseller Academy.

I don't have enough time to write!
That's why we have created The Bestseller Academy. One of the first things we'll work on is your Writing Habits, and how you can fit writing in around your busy day. By the end of the year, you will have your finished book! If your dream is to write a bestseller, don't put it off for another year - you'll still be busy then.

I am not a good enough writer to join a Writing Academy
We can't begin to tell you how many million-selling authors question their writing, even now! If you have self-doubts, we'll coach you through those as we dive into the Inner Game of Writing. You won't recognise the writer you'll become 12 months from now.

I can't afford to join a writing academy
If finances are a challenge, we are offering scholarships worth up to $1,000.

  • Tried to make a video of myself talking about my new courses - which are now LIVE, baby! - but the light was awful, and the best I managed was this still of me looking grainy & and bit perplexed. In quite like it. Grainy & perplexed might just be my vibe.

ANYWAY - did I mention my courses are now up online? Thank you all for talking me through this on Sunday. I’m actually really proud of them and excited about sharing them. I think they’re uniquely me, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve.

WINTERING FOR WRITERS starts July 30th, and is aimed at writers who are wintering right now - stuck, isolated, rejected, invisible, overwhelmed or feeling like they’ve failed. Or all of them at once - been there! It’s a self-paced process to reflect on where you are and to find what you need to do next. Like the book, it’s kind, honest and informed by the wisdom of nature & folklore.

WRITING YOUR TRUE STORY is a deep dive into to craft of non-fiction, whether you’re writing memoir, nature, biography, reportage, narrative non-fiction or special mix all of your own...

Click the link in my bio to take a look if they’re your thing. I’ll try to write a couple of posts that say a little more about them in the coming days. And I might even manage to make a video, who knows! 💛

  • RAISE. YOUR. FUCKING. RATES. 💰🙌🏻💰🙌🏻
.
...Because I'm not kidding when I say freelancers who can do ALL of these things are few and far between.
.
And if you can't do all of these things?
.
Learn how.💪🏻
.
It's part of being a business owner. No one is going to hold your hand and hold you accountable all day. ‼️You have to do that shit yourself.
.
Struggling to hit deadlines? Learn time management.
.
Not the friendliest to your clients, even though they're done nothing wrong? Learn what you can do to be a pleasure to work with (a little empathy goes a long way!).
.
And if you can't get the job done well... LEARN from someone who DOES know how to do whatever you need to do (whether that's writing client case studies, blog posts, or something else!).💻
.
Comment below and let me know if you're good at all three of these things! ⤵️⤵️
.
IF not, which do you struggle with? And if so, what's stopping you from raising your rates? LET ME KNOW! ⤵️⤵️

  • Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day! There’s a new video up on my channel 🤗 In it, I’m breaking down what it REALLY means to be “qualified” as a creative individual and I’m bringin’ the fire 🔥 Trust me, you won’t want to miss it. Link in bio or watch here: https://youtu.be/TuzXe5VwKJI
・・・
Also, I’m opening up enrollment for my writing program, Valiance, for the first time this year (last enrollment period was December 2018 😱). Don’t let 2019 be yet another year you put your dreams of becoming an author on the back burner—make it the year you finally DO the thing you’ve always wanted to do! • I remember when I told a family member I was going to start a writing business... they rolled their eyes 🙄 and LAUGHED IN MY FACE. 🤣
.
And you know what?
.
Maybe they kind of had a reason to react that way.
.
After all, I was a college dropout who’d spent most of my post high school life drinking my sorrows away and working at a call center. 😫
.
But still...
.
It doesn’t feel good to have someone you care about so blatantly saying, “I don’t think you can really do this.”
.
I was READY to make a big change though. I knew I was capable of so much more.💪🏻
.
So I had a decision to make:
.
1️⃣: I could let that one shitty opinion hold me back and tell myself:
.
“They’re right. I have no experience. I’m a college dropout. I’m a failure. I’ll just give up now to avoid failing even more.”😖
.
OR...
.
2️⃣: I could become my own biggest damn cheerleader and tell myself:
.
“💥I CAN do this and I WILL do it, no matter what it takes!”💥😃
.
Thankfully, I decided to stand in my own fucking corner, even when that meant I was standing alone.💪🏻
.
And 4 months after I decided to give freelance writing my all?
.
...I had my first $5,000 month writing for clients!💰
.
(Even though I had NO COLLEGE DEGREE and was basically a broke, clueless beginner.)
.
Now, my income has grown even more and I’m literally living my biggest dream of traveling full-time with my husband. 🌊✨
.
BUT...
.
👊🏼 I’d NEVER be where I am today if I had let that one shitty opinion hold me back.👊🏼
.
(And BTW, LOADS of people told me I shouldn’t start a business!)
.
.
So, a word of encouragement;
.
✨Sometimes, you might have to become your OWN biggest supporter and stand in your own corner - even if that means standing alone for a while.✨
.
Don’t let the small mindedness of others hold you back from the BIG THINGS you know you can accomplish.💪🏻🙌🏻
.
(And if there’s no one else in your corner... I’m here. And I’m rooting for YOU.)💞
.
⤵️Tell me below if you’ve ever had a similar experience with a friend or family member. It SUCKS, but I know for me sharing those experiences has been helpful!! ⤵️

・・・
That’s how many words it takes per day to get a 50,000-word draft of a book down in just one month’s time.
・・・
The biggest blockers? Inspiration. Time. And consistency. The first two aren’t exactly in our control—inspiration can come in waves and sometimes our 24-hour day feels like a 5-hour one 😅—but consistency? Now THAT is completely within our control.
・・・
In four years, I’ve written 8 books (that’s 2 a year) and I wrote each of those first drafts in just one month’s time 🤯 The secret? I figured how to be CONSISTENT . . . and I figured out how to STAY consistent. I have a method and it works. Not just for me, but for countless others. Seeing as I’m here to help YOU write your book, I knew it’d be a major disservice to NOT share this knowledge, which is exactly why I made an e-course just for you 🤗
・・・
In my self-study course, Write 50K in 30 Days, you’ll learn how to create and develop complex characters, build a convincing world, and plot your story with ease and confidence. Not only does this course come with an editable (and printable) 35-page workbook, it also comes with 4 weekly pep talk videos (to get you motivated to write on those tougher days), as well as a 20-minute workshop on outlining and a training on self-editing your first draft.
・・・
A $200 value, I’ve extended the 50% off discount for this course for another week, making it just $97 🙌🏼 All you have to do is use coupon code WRITER1019 at checkout at: http://www.kristenmartinbooks.com/50k30days

  • I’m thinking about running my writing course The Quiet Words again next month. I normally run it twice a year, February and September, and that’s what my website, Our Story Time, is all about. It’s an eight week online writing course, designed to connect you to your creativity and think differently about writing so that it does not feel like a terrifying chore but rather something that comes naturally. But this year I have been so occupied with my writing and my book that I have rather neglected my courses and my blog. In fact, I’ve been feeling oddly self-conscious about my blog lately...
which sounds as though perhaps I’m the right sort of candidate for my own course.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyway, all that aside, this is just to say that I hope very much to be able to offer The Quiet Words again, and I am setting things in motion behind the scenes. I hope to tell you more about it later and I also hope very much that some of you might like to join me!
