  • Happy birthday to Nesbert "Stix" Hooper (born August 15, 1938, Houston, Texas, United States). Stix is a drummer, best known as a founding member of the seminal jazz band, The Crusaders. He is currently the only surviving founder of the group. However, he retired from the Crusaders in the early 2000s.
A native of Houston, Texas, Stix developed an interest in music, drums and percussion at a very early age. Starting in junior high, under the direction of George Magruder, the school’s band director, Stix began devoting much of his time to the study of all aspects of music including composition, song writing, etc. Studying at Phillis Wheatley High School, spearheaded by band director, Sammy Harris, Stix eventually formed a band called the Swingsters, later on the Modern Jazz Sextet. While matriculating at Texas Southern University, Stix received continual coaching from members of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and other local professional musicians. Upon moving to the west coast, he studied music at California State University, Los Angeles, and also received coaching from well-known private instructors and his personal mentors. During this time the Jazz Crusaders were formed eventually becoming the Crusaders, a world-renowned entity.
Stix has performed, collaborated, composed with and produced for a wide range of music greats, including Arthur Fiedler, George Shearing, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, B.B. King, Grant Green, Grover Washington, Jr., Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, Nancy Wilson, Rolling Stones and many more.Stix is credited with creating an original style of drumming that has been incorporated in Jazz as well as other musical genres, called “Jazz Funk.” He is a long time endorser, player and contributor to Pearl through its development during the 60’s and 70’s beginning in Chiba, Japan. It’s been said, “Stix Hooper should be any drummer’s go-to-guy when they wanna learn about “the pocket.” #jazzlegend #jazzdrummer #jazz #bebop #swing #bigband #postbop #fusion #epic #brillance #master #greatness #composer #bandleader #fromthearchives #jazzphotography #musicblog #drums #stixhooper #happybirthday #virtuoso #genius 🎼🥁🎂🔥💯💣📸🙏🏾✌🏿💙

  • Child prodigy and virtuoso English classical guitarist and lutenist, Julian Alexander Bream died in his home on August 14, 2020; he was 87 years old. Along with Segovia and other contemporaries, he was key in contributing to the popularization of the guitar as a respectable solo instrument.

Bream started his lifelong connection to the guitar by strumming his father's jazz guitar at an early age while following dance music of his days on the radio. Reading Eddy Lang's instruction books, he taught himself the basics of Jazz harmony.

At 11 years old, Bream was gifted a gut-strung guitar. The following year he won a junior piano competition, enabling him to study piano and composition at the Royal College of Music. At age 13, he played his first guitar recital at Cheltenham in 1947.

He recorded for RCA Victor and EMI Classics. He published a number of his classical guitar arrangements which influenced my learning experience while I was attending conservatory in Massachusetts. His unique fingering approach to the guitar opened up for me a new world of understanding regarding this mostly misunderstood musical instrument.

Like many of us starting out on the guitar, he was influenced by Andres Segovia and Francisco Tárrega. Bream received 20 awards and recognitions throughout his career, including Officer and later Commander of the Order of the British Empire, 6 honorary doctorates, 4 Grammy awards, two Edison awards, two fellowships, The Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist's Award, the Gramophone Classical Musical Award's Lifetime Achievement, and the Villa-Lobos Gold Medal presented by the composer's widow.

He leaves a legacy of 34 LPs and 52 CDs, in addition to having influenced many guitar professionals, composers and countless of young aspiring guitar players. He will be greatly missed.

  • Happy birthday to jazz pianist and vibraphonist Terry Pollard (August 15, 1931- December 16, 2009).Pollard was prominent in the Detroit jazz scene of the 1940s and 1950s. She has been described as a "major player who was inexplicably overlooked."🎶
Pollard began her career by collaborating with other Detroit musicians, such as Billy Mitchell (and Elvin Jones, in the house band at the Blue Bird Inn), Johnny Hill, and the Emmitt Slay Trio. She was discovered by Terry Gibbs and toured with him in the early 1950s, playing piano and vibraphone. She recorded an album with him, Terry Gibbs Quartet - Featuring Terry Pollard. Pollard appeared with Gibbs on an episode of The Tonight Show hosted by Steve Allen. Her collaborations with Gibbs from 1953 to 1957 marked the height of her career.
Pollard also performed with John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.
Pollard recorded a self-titled solo album for Bethlehem Records in 1955 and won the Down Beat Magazine New Artist award in 1956. Pollard retired from her full-time music career shortly thereafter in order to raise a family, but she continued to play locally in Detroit and performed with visiting artists, including Diana Ross and the Supremes. She was inducted into the Michigan Jazz Hall of Fame.
Her contributions to the mid-century Detroit jazz scene were recognized in the book Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit 1920-1960, by Lars Bjorn and Jim Gallert.🎶 #jazzlegend #jazzpianist #jazz #bebop #swing #stylist #bigband #postbop #classicjazz #epic #brillance #master #greatness #creator #musicislife #fromthearchives #jazzphotography #musicblog #piano #vibes #terrypollard #happybirthday #virtuoso #rip 🎼🎹🎂💣🔥📸💯🙏🏾✌🏿🖤

  • Downbeat Hall of Fame pianist, composer, and leader Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, CC, CQ, OOnt (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was born on this date in 1925. Peterson was one of the greatest piano players of all time. A pianist with phenomenal technique on the level of his idol, Art Tatum, Peterson's speed, dexterity, and ability to swing at any tempo were amazing. Very effective in small groups, jam sessions, and in accompanying singers, O.P. was at his absolute best when performing unaccompanied solos. His original style did not fall into any specific idiom. Like Erroll Garner and George Shearing, Peterson's distinctive playing formed during the mid- to late '40s and fell somewhere between swing and bop. Peterson was criticized through the years because he used so many notes, didn't evolve much since the 1950s, and recorded a remarkable number of albums. Perhaps it is because critics ran out of favorable adjectives to use early in his career; certainly it can be said that Peterson played 100 notes when other pianists might have used ten, but all 100 usually fit, and there is nothing wrong with showing off technique when it serves the music. As with Johnny Hodges and Thelonious Monk, to name two, Peterson spent his career growing within his style rather than making any major changes once his approach was set, certainly an acceptable way to handle one's career. Because he was Norman Granz's favorite pianist (along with Tatum) and the producer tended to record some of his artists excessively, Peterson made an incredible number of albums. Not all are essential, and a few are routine, but the great majority are quite excellent, and there are dozens of classics. #jazzlegend #jazzpianist #jazz #bebop #swing #bigband #classicjazz #epic #brillance #master #greatness #composer #bandleader #musicislife #fromthearchives #jazzphotography #musicblog #trio #piano #oscarpeterson #happybirthday #icon #virtuoso #genius #legend #rip 🎼🎹🎂💣🔥📸🙏🏾✌🏿🖤

  • 🎹 Oscar Peterson, in full Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, (born August 15, 1925, Montreal, Quebec, Canada—died December 23, 2007, Mississauga, Ontario), Canadian jazz pianist best known for his dazzling solo technique.

In 1949 Peterson went to the United States, where he appeared in one of jazz promoter Norman Granz’s concerts at Carnegie Hall, New York City. Art Tatum and especially Nat King Cole were important influences on Peterson’s style. Like Cole’s early trio, the Oscar Peterson Trio that first became popular featured piano, bass (Ray Brown), and guitar, most notably Herb Ellis (1953–58).

Cascades of many notes characterized Peterson’s playing. His earlier work, if often glib, was nevertheless invariably swinging. In the 1970s he began playing frequent solo concerts and duets, often with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. These proved the most rewarding medium for his talents, and he became one of the most popular jazz pianists of his time. His 1974–75 duet albums with trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Harry Edison, Clark Terry, and Jon Faddis demonstrated generous warmth and sensitivity. His recordings won eight Grammy Awards.

Peterson continued to perform until 2006, although his public appearances became sporadic after a stroke in 1993 affected the use of his left hand as well as his ability to walk. He was the author of Jazz Exercises and Pieces (1965) and Oscar Peterson New Piano Solos (1965). His autobiography, A Jazz Odyssey: The Life of Oscar Peterson, was published in 2002.

  • September evenings on the Cape.. I had a very nice meeting this week with the Wequassett Resort in Chatham for Virtuoso Travel Week. They are offering a 25% discount to clients of travel advisors the month of September. September is many people’s’ favorite time..think less crowds, nice temps, and evenings like this with fire pits with a view. So if you’re wanting a weekend fall escape, this is a great option. Plus Virtuoso extra amenities including 2 complimentary daily breakfasts per room and resort credit come with as well. Message me for more info.! #wequassettresort @wequassett #virtuosotravel

  • One year in the books of taking on all that the travel industry has to offer. 👏 The good. The bad. And the amazing people and beautiful places I’ve encountered along the way. ❤️

Huge shoutout to @bethetravelgram for ushering me into my dream career, and to all my friends and family that have been so supportive through these crazy 365 days. Couldn’t have done it without ya. 😘

Here’s to hoping next year isn’t quite as unpredictable as this one was! 🤷‍♀️😷

  • I’m kicking off Virtuoso Travel Week from Las Vegas, but everyone else left me hanging! 🍾

✨Sadly my travel friends & hotel partners won’t be joining me in my city this year and everything will be done virtually but I’ll still be making connections and networking all week!

✨This is the biggest week of the year for luxury travel. It’s where relationships are built with the hotels I send my clients to (making sure you get that upgrade and VIP service).

✨I’ll take you with me over the next few days to answer some commonly asked questions about how it works to partner with an advisors and also highlight some of the hotels I’m meeting with!!

🥂Stay tuned as this virtual conference is new to me too and I may need some champagne along the way!
