What’s COVID-19 taught me? Patience and perspective, two things I’ll be leading with a lot more of as we come out of this pandemic.
 
Since very few people needed a tourism content marketing agency when people are confined to their four walls, we took it upon ourselves to make Media Mortar its own client – something we’ve neglected to do these past three years.
 
We launched a content marketing podcast (CONTENTious), created a 52 week content calendar for tourism operators to help power their social media and set up a marketing manager on-demand service where people can book me for a 1.5 hour strategy session to set the course for their quarter.
 
Without the gift of time, I’m certain these three things would never have happened.
 
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to turn, my biggest advice is to look inwards on your business. Throughout the darkest days of running a business through COVID, I’ve found this sort of creativity good for my small business soul.

  • The whole team at Wanderlust Communications is so passionate about tourism. We love experiencing new things and exploring our amazing state. I've lived in WA for close to 10 years now, but I still love travelling to new places within WA and still have a long list to get through! Isabelle is from America, and since moving to Perth is busy ticking off WA destinations with her Aussie husband, Mitch. Whilst Danica is our only Perthite, she's no stranger to adventure, regularly travelling down south for some blissful South West adventures. 

International and interstate travel is still on hold for @WesternAustralia, so we're trying to support our beloved tourism industry wherever we can! From meals at our local pubs, trips to the @Perthzoo and @ScitechWA with the kids and as many trips as we can afford, we're doing our bit to keep our amazing operators going through these tough times. 

In the last few weeks, Isabelle headed north along @australiascoralcoast and back through @australiasgoldenoutback, including an epic kayak tour with @Wula_Gura. Amy and her family headed south to Dunsborough and tried out @Nextlevelmonkeybiz with her very excited 5 year old. Danica grabbed her mates and headed to Margaret River for some long lunches and sunset beers at @EagleBayBrewingCo.

Why it doesn't work:⁠
▶️ Simply following someone doesn't equate to building a relationship, which is what Instagram is all about.⁣⁣⁠
▶️ It therefore doesn't bring you closer to leads or bookings.⁣⁣⁠
▶️ You can get blocked by following too many people quickly.⁣⁣⁠
▶️ It may get you a quick influx of followers but this is usually followed by a drop in engagement, as these new accounts are following you but not necessarily engaging with you.⁣⁣⁠

Do this instead:⁣⁣⁠
1️⃣Each day, pick a hashtag that you know your ideal client avatar engages with or uses.⁣⁣⁠
2️⃣Go through recent posts until you find someone that looks like they could be an ideal client⁣⁣.⁠
3️⃣Like 3 posts, leave 1 meaningful comment, follow and send a genuine DM to start a conversation.⁣⁣⁠

This may be a slower process but it's hyper-targeted, most people follow back and you've started a relationship, which you can nurture all the way to conversion over time. As you keep interacting over DMs and engaging with each other's posts, they keep seeing your posts and stories too, resulting in more engagement, and them truly getting to know you and your business.⁣⁣⁠

  • HONEST POST ALERT 🚨 Well guys, what a hectic few weeks it’s been! At the start of lockdown I was in sheer panic mode. Stress and complete sadness washed over me every day for a large part of lockdown. I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying this, but it felt like I was completely mourning my business, goals and previous wins.⁣⁣ Lets face it, working in the hospitality/tourism sector during a global pandemic was never going to be easy!⁣

Fast forward to now and things are REALLY beginning to look up. Over the last 10 days I have taken on a handful of wonderful clients (ideal clients too!!) and started to shift my services to offer not only what individuals/businesses NEED and WANT, but what I ENJOY offering.⁣⁣⁣
⁣Being back in my shared office space really puts a smile on my face too (massive extrovert over here🤙🏼🤙🏼.)⁣⁣

I can finally look back on lockdown and accept that it was a TOTAL shambles, but it also taught me to believe that things will get better as long as you put the time, effort and passion into your business. It really was a time to pause, reflect, recharge and restart. Im starting to think that maybe it was the small, yet very bizarre “break” from the “ordinary” that we all needed?⁣

  • UMA CARTA ABERTA A TODOS OS EMPREENDEDORES DO TURISMO

Há exatamente 2 meses fiz meu último tour, há 2 meses tento me reinventar e buscar ressignificado na rotina, no trabalho e na vida. Há 60 dias não recebo 1 euro de receita, apenas boletos. Há 60 dias que acompanho as notícias de empresas grandes declarando falência.

Há 1.440 horas que minha mente não descansa buscando soluções, criando alternativas e trabalhando incessantemente para encontrar uma saída. Há 86.400 minutos vivo em uma montanha russa emocional onde não sei onde irá acabar e há 86.400 minutos eu me questiono o que será do mercado do turismo e do meu futuro.

Devo continuar investindo em um mercado sem perspectiva em 2020? E se eu mudar para a estratégia online, será que vai dar certo? Será que eu quero prestar o tipo ou modelo de serviço que o futuro mercado requer? Quando as fronteiras abrirem, como será o comportamento humano?

Essas e muitas outras perguntas me acompanham do momento que eu acordo ao momento que eu fecho os olhos, mas também me acompanham nos meus sonhos ou pesadelos…

É, meu colega, não está fácil para mim e muito menos para você… mas quero compartilhar contigo o que me faz continuar. Quem sabe eu não te inspiro a se reinventar, eu continuo a lutar pelo meu sonho.

Há dois meses me lembro diariamente o motivo pelo qual eu comecei e isso me tranquiliza pois hoje, mais do que nunca na história da sociedade moderna, as pessoas vão valorizar o bem mais precioso: a LIBERDADE.

As pessoas não estarão mais dispostas a desperdiçar tempo com tours medíocres, com armadilhas oportunistas, com experiências superfaturadas e conhecimento raso.

O futuro do turismo deve prezar por QUALIDADE e não por falta de oportunidade, aproveite esse tempo para se tornar o melhor profissional que você pode ser. Pois, quando as pessoas tiverem liberdade novamente, que elas escolham você, a sua empresa e as suas experiências.
