  • This morning, while I was snorkeling with my family, I felt something passing between my ankles. I looked down and saw this strange fish that stopped about three feet away from me. My family came to see it: it stayed a while and then hid under the sand. We have then found out it was a torpedo, a fish than can stun its prey (and people) with electric shocks!😅

  • Revenge for Savo
______________________________
August 9, 1942 was a somber day for the surface fleet, which had just lost four heavy cruisers off of Savo Island to Japanese Cruiser Division Six in a close quarters night engagement. USS ASTORIA, USS QUINCY, USS VINCENNES, and HMAS CANBERRA are lost with heavy casualties. The Japanese ships sustain some splinter damage. On August 10, the following day after the battle, the Japanese cruisers were nearly in the safety of Kavieng Harbor, New Guinea. Nearly. Waiting for them outside the entrance however was a small, brave allied submarine, S-44. By all accounts S-44 was obsolete being an old S-boat from the early 20s, but she still had teeth, and four of them were pointed right at the port side of the 8,800 ton heavy cruiser KAKO. At 8:06AM, at a range of 900 yards, S-44 lets go a salvo of four old Mark 10 torpedoes. The Mark 10 supply, while dwindling rapidly, was more reliable than the current Mark 14s. Less than two minutes later three of the fired torpedoes complete their runs on the port side of KAKO, tearing three large holes. Her engine spaces flood and she immediately looses power. She goes down some moments later. S-44 just claimed The Silent Services first cruiser of the war, and up to that point the heaviest Japanese Man-Of-War sunk. It was a much welcomed victory during some very dark days. While the victory at Midway a couple months prior had greatly impacted the war, victory still hung in the balance. S-44 did her part in making sure victory lay with the allies. First slide is a sketch depicting S-44s attack that occurred 78 years ago today. The second is of S-44s conning tower and her achievements thus far, taken sometime in 1943. The final image is of Cmdr. Moore of S-44 being congratulated on the victory upon their return from that particular war patrol. #subpacww2 #submarinewarfare #pacificwar #submarine #warpatrol #veterans #sboat #s44 #usss44 #pigboat #torpedo #usnavy #navy #usn #japan #america #1942 #victory #guadalcanal #sunk #cruiser #ship #history #ww2 #worldwartwo #thesecondworldwar #subpac
