  • Scorsese’s Becoming God:

Borrowing style from Demille and words from Kazantzakis’, Scorsese makes it clear, from the very beginning of his The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) that it is a personal exploration of “eternal spiritual conflict”, “incessant, merciless battle between the spirit and the flesh”. Thus, Scorsese uses Christ’s character as an allegory to investigate the “eternal spiritual conflict” within human’s soul and body and shows Christ who becomes rather than is.
The first appearance of Christ (Willem Dafoe) in the film is a high-shot a.k.a. God’s view shot. There, Christ is lying in the shape of an embryo, sharing his inner struggle in the voice-over. The second time, in the desert scene, when Scorsese uses a similar filming technique, Christ is drawing a circle around him and sits in the center. The final use of the bird-eye shot appears on the deathbed of Christ who is surrounded by his family members.
In all three cases, Scorsese constructs circular composition around his character. Moreover, each time the high shot appears, Christ is making 180 degree changing decisions. Being a weak and childish Christ in the first sequence, he becomes a fighter with an axe in the second. In the last one, Jesus decides to fulfill his mission and become God. This development from child-to fighter-to god contains a very interesting message about Christ: In order to become God, he has to overcome humans.
Scorsese wonderfully plays with the geometry of this message — when changing the circle into a squared cross in the end. This development makes Christ an allegory of man who became, rather than initially was God. Accordingly, rather than trying to depict Christ’s struggle of flesh and spirit, Scorsese depicts man’s struggle of body and soul, allegorized with the character of Christ whose ontological status fits perfectly into this depiction.

  • Between the time #RobertDeNiro signed a thirty-five thousand dollar contract to appear in #TaxiDriver, and when it began filming, he won an #Oscar for his role in #TheGodfather: Part II (1974), and his profile soared. The producers were terrified that De Niro would ask for a deserved large pay raise, since #ColumbiaPictures was very discomfited by the project, and were looking for excuses to pull the plug on it, but De Niro said he would honor his original deal so the film would get made. 🎬

He also studied mental illness, and - during his off-time when filming 1900 (1976) - visited a US Army base in Northern Italy and tape-recorded conversations with Midwestern soldiers so that he could pick up their accent.
