Before they were called "side hustles," I made some money in high school by selling my (and thrifted) clothes on eBay and Facebook. It's been fun to get back in the game!

I've enlisted the help of frugal experts, @frugal_beans to bring you some great tips on saving at the grocery store! Check out the full article in my bio 😎
▫️
I personally am VERY guilty of overspending on groceries. Those of you who love to cook will understand my struggles - I have to physically restrain myself from buying saffron and fresh vanilla beans 😭💔 That's why tips 2 & 3 really help. Having a list and specific meal plan greatly reduce how much I spend at the store!
▫️
What other tips do you use to keep grocery costs down? Let me know in the comments below 😊 Also, does anyone know where to get cheap(er) saffron in Melbourne? There are so many recipes I want to use it in but really can't justify the cost 😭

  • 💳 Who else thought cancelling a credit card was good for your credit score?

You're not alone, trying to understand the credit score algorithm is confusing AF - I get this question a lot!

Answer: Do not cancel your old credit card(s)! It will decrease your credit score.

15% of the credit score algorithm is credit history - so allllll off that good history of your payments to that card will be removed.

Instead, simply STOP using that card (cut it up/put it on ice) and keep the history of it without using it again.

Should I do more content around credit scores?

Comment with a 🙌🏻 if you'd want to learn more!

  • Another month has flown by! WFH was officially extended to January 2021, but word on the street is it will most likely be extended again to summer 2021. No complaints from me on that 😁. I’m just laying low, paying down debt (while making sure my EF stays fully funded...v important during these times!), staying in as much as possible 😷 🦠, and gradually transitioning to a more minimalistic lifestyle.
Focus points for the the month are decluttering; I aim to sell at least 20 items on Poshmark (already sold 2!) and donate things I don’t think will sell quickly. Not being lazy and ordering UberEats or DoorDash during the week...it’s ridiculously overpriced. A meal you’d pay like $12 to pick up costs $20+ with fees and tip 🤯#notworthit #youhavefoodathome 😂. Getting back into a consistent and sustainable gym routine. And putting an extra $1800 towards debt (already done ✅ 8/1).

  • Pre-COVID I listened to finance podcasts on my drive to and from work every day. It was a great way to set my intentions and keep money on my mind — I was always entertained and learned something new every day. But now that my commute literally just involves walking down the stairs to my desk, I’ve gotten out of the habit. I follow @thebudgetnista though and saw that she recently was featured on one of my favorite podcasts (@choosefiradio) so I had to give it a listen. Omg y’all. Tiffany’s advice was so amazing and she was so REAL — I couldn’t believe how many amazing knowledge bombs she dropped in one hour-long episode. If you’re tired of financial advice that makes you feel bad about yourself, or being preached at by angry old white dudes, check out the Budgetnista and listen to this episode! ❤️

Our organic, homegrown snow peas. They’re delicious, crisp, sweet and crunchy and I’ve enjoyed nothing more than eating them straight off the bush.

  • WHAT!! I only just turned 26 years old; this could buy me a 3 bed home outright in the place I grew up 🏡 or, according to the 4% rule, give me $500 a month for the rest of my life. 💰 OR buy me 46,000 orders of @chipotle chips & guac 🥑 😉

In 2019 I thought hitting $150k would be a stretch goal for the year ahead; didn't think I'd hit it five months early 😱 and NOT while we’re facing everything in 2020... but there really is no predicting the moves of Mr. Market 📊 Staying cautiously hopeful for the rest of the year ahead 😬

  • Fear is EXPENSIVE 🥵😟 ⁣
⁣
Stop worrying about lattes or avocado toast, start worrying about YOUR FEAR.⁣
⁣
So many of us live in fear because we're too afraid of how others will see us, or we're too afraid of the unknown.⁣
⁣
Stop living small and start thinking BIG. We've only got a limited time on this Earth, so grab life by the balls 🤪 ⁣
⁣
Here's how to defeat fear:⁣
⁣
▪️ TAKE ACTION: ⁣
Starting is the scariest and hardest part. Just rip the band-aid off!! You'll notice the fear immediately melt away. It's all about getting that momentum going.⁣
⁣
▪️ EDUCATE YOURSELF: ⁣
We're scared of what we don't know. Immerse yourself deeply into the topic you're most intimidated by. This is exactly how I became a personal finance fanatic. If you KEEP teling yourself how "difficult" and "confusing" finance is, it's going to STAY that way. Open your mind to education!⁣
⁣
Try to do one thing that scares you this month :) You'll notice it's not so bad after all, and that it was all in your head!! 🤭⁣

  • So, as most of you know, I'm getting married in 15 days (but who's counting? Definitely not me) 👰🏼

Anywayyy -- Joe and I have been extremely intentional with our money for our elopement. We have spent thousands of dollars on what WE value. Photography, religious items, hiking plans, etc.

It has me thinking about some of my monthly rituals that I put off earlier in my debt free journey, but I no longer care to restrict.

Unfortunately, I am not as talented in the DIY nail department as my friend @easy_budget (go follow her and check out her blog on how to get professional looking nails at home)

That means, I spend around $50-60 to get these talons when I go to the salon. 💅🏼

And I LOVE them.

I love the way I feel when I have my nails done. I love the pampering hour it takes. I love feeling chic and feminine.

It's a treat to myself that I enjoy -- so instead of depriving myself of something that boosts my confidence, I am moving forward with intentionally spending my money there. No more shame about my nail game.

What is something that is a 'want' that you enjoy spending money on? How does it bring you value?

  • ✨Oh hey there powerhouse! 👋⁣
⁣
We have a lot of new faces in the Arise Tribe these days⁣ so it’s time for #fridayintroductions ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My name is Nicole. I’m the founder of Arise Financial Coaching. I’m a savvy money strategist (with just a sprinkle of sass)💃🏻 who is on a mission to help you use the money to build the life you are OBSESSED with✈️💸🏝🥂⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve always been money-minded. Growing up during the summers I opened up lemonade stands, started mini businesses in my preteens, and have fond memories of negotiating alongside my parents while on family trips. I went to business school and my first job was in corporate sales where I was at the top of my class →🤓 NERD alert lol IDC I’m 100% super proud of this⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When it comes to my abbreviated money story, I grew up in a home where I saw how money stress didn’t go away the more money you made. ⁣
⁣
When my husband and I got married, we went from negative net worth (hello student loans, credit cards, and car debt) to a positive $200K net worth in 4.5 years on 56K avg per year 😅🥳💰⁣
⁣⁣
AYO AM I RIGHT? ⁣💃🏻🥂⁣
⁣⁣
People have all kinds of opinions about celebrating financial wins but here’s the thing... I’ve decided to throw that rule out the window because financial wins are worth celebrating! ⁣
⁣
And if we can do 200K in 4.5 years, I want you to imagine what is possible for your money! ⁣⭐️⁣
⁣⁣
My rule is to not shy away from financial wins to make other people feel comfortable⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Money can be empowering or constricting in your story —-> I choose the former and hope that you do too ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If money is overwhelming for you I’m here to say it doesn’t always have to stay that way!⁣ That’s why I started Arise Financial Coaching because I love celebrating your wins even more than I love celebrating my own⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My clients go from overwhelmed to saving THOUSANDS 🤑 toward their goals and good golly it’s fun!⁣
⁣⁣
Being fantastic with money is something ANYONE can learn and IMPROVE!
⁣⁣
Besides that, I am a Puerto Rican Princessa 🇵🇷 👸who loves to travel to Western Europe, eat sushi, and salsa dance with @jake.stanley1

But enough about me, I want to get to know YOU! say hello and introduce yourself below 🤗👇

  • my REACTION when they say millennials can’t afford a house because they are buying iced coffees and avocado toast....

Let’s be real here..if you a buy a 5$ coffee EVERY day it will be at most $1820 a year. The median home price in the city of Miami is $500K, so if you want to put down 20% that will put you at $100K plus other fees like closing costs which puts that coffee savings at a mere 1-2% of a total down payment. Yes, you can do a much lower down payment but I am not trying to be in debt forever 🤷🏻‍♀️

While $1,820 is certainly still a lot of money cutting out your trips to the coffee shops which is an experience and to socialize for most people will NOT make you rich. And let’s be honest, who is going to buy coffee EVERY day? At most I go 1-2 times a week so cutting that out would only get me a few hundred dollars..

Some things that actually can help you save up for a hefty payment are minimizing your fixed expenses and maximize your income...

Let’s talk fixed expenses...find ways to reduce your current housing cost and your car payments. Most of the time the biggest expense people have to shell out is their housing, and if you can try to reduce that expense.

Car payments is one that isn’t talked about as often but is usually a very substantial expense. On average the monthly car payment is ~$500, if you can get a car that’s a few years old (I’m not talking a 2008 whip lol) but if you can reduce your payment by 25% you can save ~150 a month!

Personally, I HATE the frugal mindset and I am a big advocate for learning new skills to increase your income at work or finding other sources of income rather than restricting life! I know we all want more money but we still should enjoy our lives 🤷🏻‍♀️

Happy Friday y’all and friendly reminder you don’t need to feel guilty about going to Starbucks, because we all need to splurge a little sometimes and cutting out your target trips and eating out less are WAY more likely to impact your savings rate than cutting out a few coffees!

Don’t hate on this $10 latte from Dior I promise I’ve only been there once 😂

  • Happy Friday!⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
One of my favorite Friday rituals for YEARS has been working on our family budget. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
Yes, I’m a dork. 🤓⁣⁣⁣⁣
Yes, you can #judgeyomomma! 🤧 LOL!⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
No, seriously, when we’ve had VERY little and when we’ve had more than enough, one thing that remained constant was me whipping out a detailed spreadsheet that chronicled the good, the bad and the ugly 🤕 of our finances. It’s helped us tremendously over the years to see how God provides when funds were low, and to see how far we’ve come. It also helps identify our strong and weak areas when it comes to how we manage our funds. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
We prioritize our budget in order of most to least important.⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
These are the categories that we have on our budget:⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
● Kingdom (We don’t pay “tithes” per say (oh relax, and unclutch your pearls 🙄), but we do⁣⁣⁣⁣
believe in giving to church /ministry/ outreach/ justice oriented causes. More often than not⁣⁣⁣⁣
Kingdom is much higher than 10% anyway⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Housing (Rent/Mortgage)⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Groceries⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Auto Gas⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Electricity/Heating⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Water Bill⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Car Payment⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Internet⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Cell Phone⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Car Insurance⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Preschool Tuition⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Savings⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Debt elimnation⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Netflix/Subscriptions⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Investing⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Entertainment (Eating out, family outings)⁣⁣⁣⁣
● Vacation Sinking Fund (look up sinking funds)⁣⁣⁣⁣
💰 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
Adulting is hard 😅! ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Do you use a budget? If so, how have you seen it help you with your finances? ⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • “Oooh. You grabbed the name brand Fruity Pebbles. You must be feelin’ fancy.” - Joe

I accidentally grabbed Fruity Pebbles instead of the generic brand, which always tastes the same and is markedly cheaper. Food is my biggest budget nemesis — but I do know that buying generic is the way to go with most things. Often the products are made in the same factory and slapped with different labels — so definitely shop store brand over name brand, friends. :)

  • What could you do today to start creating the life you want?
.
This is me looking like a happy camper in Yosemite, California. I had wanted to visit for years, and finally we made it happen in 2018 through saving, and a bit of side hustling too.
.
The reason I’ve chosen this specific picture is because the life I want in the future is to be able to travel wherever, whenever... And I suspect that flexibility is something that a lot of you will crave in your life too.
.
We are talking all about side hustles this week on @thriftylondoner - and so this is your little nudge to start thinking about what you want your life to look like, and the steps you need to take in order to get there.
.
Grab a piece of paper, write down what your ideal life looks like- and start brainstorming! The change you make today could be as small as doing some research- the important part is just to get started 🙌 💫

  • “What percent of my income should I spend on rent?” ⁣
⁣
Who am I, or anyone else, to tell you what percent of your income you should spend on anything???? ⁣
⁣
I truly don’t believe in set percents. Anyone who takes a budgeting coaching session with me can tell you I don’t tell you what you can or cannot spend in any one category. ⁣
⁣
As long as you are achieving your long term goals and saving, any percent is fine. You can spend as much of your income as you want on anything, just not on everything. ⁣
⁣
It doesn’t make sense for me to tell someone who travels every weekend and loves to go out the eat to spend the same amount on rent as someone who makes the same salary but likes to stay home. Or two people who make the same salary but one has a child and the other doesn’t. PERSONAL FINANCE IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL. 🙅🏼‍♀️⁣
⁣
Meanwhile, my rent is astronomical even with a roommate but I find ways to make it work. I cut in other areas and I side hustle like crazy. ⁣
⁣
I also am constantly redecorating (this corner is new) and spending more money to make my house [apartment] a home. 🏡 Feeling comfortable in my home is important to me, now more than ever, and I’m willing to spend for that. ⁣
⁣
So think about when you want to pay off your debt, if you want to save for a down payment on a house, if you want to max out your retirement accounts, etc. and then plan your spending around those goals!
