  • allow me to reintroduce myself... ⁣
⁣
my name is KIIIIIIIIDDDDDD ROOOOOOOCC...⁣
⁣
oh wait. jk. it’s me 𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮. ⁣
⁣
I was talking to a client the other day and telling them about how I came into this career and realized maybe I don’t share it enough ... so here are some fun facts about my journey in the hair industry! ⁣
⁣
✨ I started working at a salon in my hometown of Ellicott City, MD when I was 14 🤯 {in Maryland you didn’t need a license to assist, so I was shampooing, toning / glazing and even neutralizing perms!} it’s crazy knowing all I know now, that I was allowed to do all that! no doubt it sparked my passion 💥 ⁣
⁣
✨ I came to Boston to attend Northeastern University. I started as a Psychology Major and graduated with a degree in Communications. {both of these education fields play an important role in my work behind the chair everyday!} 🤓 ⁣
⁣
✨ While at NU, I got a part time job working as a receptionist at a salon on Newbury Street. I learned the ins and out of the business side of the salon industry. 📊 ⁣
⁣
✨ I attended Paul Mitchell The School in Tampa, FL. I can’t speak highly enough about about their education program! {Fun(ny) fact: when I attended PMTS it was located on North Nebraska Ave ... for any of my Tiger King fans.. you might recognize that street name 😳🐯} ⁣
⁣
✨ Thirteen { yes 13! 🤯🙉🤩} years later I am a proud member of the Stilisti team here in Boston. I have an incredible community of clients for whom I am grateful. ♡ ⁣
⁣
✨ What’s next?! I am excited to announce that I will be starting an online coaching community for hairstylists everywhere! If you’re still with me and want to learn more.. drop a comment below 👇🏼 or DM me 📬 with the 𝗔𝗚𝗘 that 𝗬𝗢𝗨 started in this industry! Can’t wait to chat!! xxalexandra

  • Brow game = STRONG⁣
⁣
Or does it?!⁣
⁣
Next to pro hairstyling, personal makeup + hair questions are the next most messaged/commented/requested topic for me so over the years I’ve done a few Beauty Edition classes where I focus on hair and makeup tips to try on YOURSELF. I don’t believe women need makeup to be beautiful; you are beautiful. But I believe learning some tips from a pro to foster confidence is HUGE. ⁣
⁣
I’ve always done these in person until recently when I’ve been hired by private companies to do LIVE, virtual classes and I’m excited to bring them now to you!⁣
⁣
Link in my bio for my brow + eye makeup virtual class on Thursday, August 20th from 12-1. Learn makeup on your lunch break. Considering the 😷 life doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon, this is all the makeup we need to take the time for these days!⁣
⁣
I can’t wait to see you there! ⁣

  • Hey Friends,

One of my favorite documentaries is The Black Godfather with one of the most astute business men and influencers, @clarenceavantofficial.
✨
Although Mr. Avant is certainly a mover/shaker and powerhouse, in his own right, he is and has not been without challenges that life may bring. However, one of the most prolific comments Mr. Avant says in the documentary is - I don’t have problems, I have friends!
✨
When I tell you how much that struck me, I began thinking about my own life challenges and I must say, this also rings true in my life.
✨
I have friends who send me information at least once a week as to how I can assist my salon - spa/barber/nail tech friends and I can’t wait to be a friend to you!
✨
Reach out to me today @candacenhuff.com or comment ✨ below! I would love to share ✨Grants, ✨Business Planning and ✨PPP information with you to get you to a place of knowing you have friends, not problems!

Let’s Talk,
Candace 💋

  • Are you building real relationships on social media?

We all know that social is a huge business building tools these days... but are you using it correctly?

Let me ask you something... if someone walked up to you right now and said “I love your hair!” Would you just turn away and not respond?

No! Because it’s rude and that’s not how you make friends.

Think of social media as your brick and mortar business.
If someone comments, DMs, tags you, etc. pretend they just walked into your salon. Take the time to talk back!
Not just an emoji but a genuine response, just as you would face to face.

You don’t have to be online all day to build those relationships. Spend 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night to engage with your people!

How has social helped grow your relationships?

If you need more personal support to help grow your business... schedule a 1:1 coaching session today! Link in my bio

  • Are you hooked?

What does that mean? Listen to how my guest Mary talks about being HOOKED on a thought or story.

I've been hooked myself on a story of "I'm not good enough" lately. It just seems like everything I try to do in business and at home doesn't feel like I'm doing enough or am good enough. It's like getting hit in the gut and you just can't get up. I've laid on the ground with this for months trying to figure out how to get back up. Nobody to blame for this, it's my story. So thank you to anyone whose been in my crossfire as I work through this.

You see we all have a hook or story. It sometimes can hook us for months and years...

Listen to how Mary explains ways to get off the hook! It doesn't have to take years, you can get off the hook and move forward in a positive flow!

  • Happy Tuesday, gorgeous! 💜
.
This week we are focusing upon referrals! The seventh step of referrals is to say thank you
.
This may seem self-explanatory, but be sure to give thanks to the advocates that actually lead to more clients for you and your business. It is important to know you might not have found those clients without your advocates.
.
Instead of sending an email, try sending a handwritten note. Not only will this stand out, it’s also more thoughtful than most modern ways of communication. This simple step can go a long way to encourage the flow of referrals, and show your appreciation.

✨ a mental inclination - a disposition - a frame of mind.

✨ your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits.

✨ your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel and what you do

✨ because thoughts and beliefs are related to mindset, it also helps to understand attitude and beliefs.

✨ it is your mindset that dictates whether you fail or succeed in any pursuit.

✨What is your Mental Mindset today?

  • I have a lot to give and a lot of experience through life so far in my 35 years. Over 15 being in this beauty industry and over 6 being a business owner. 🧡⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everything I have experienced I know was for a bigger purpose. If you need a little help with your business and need a mentor. I got your back. I am real and raw with my experiences, why things went wrong, and I’ll give you advice to stay a purposeful course. It all comes down to educating yourself, knowing your why and making every decision based on it, and having the right people in your corner. 🙌🏼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most salon owners won’t talk about the real real because the honest truth is we have a team of employees to protect. People that are under our care should never know the chaos of the actual business side of things. I’ve learned this the hard way. I also learned that my team members are not my friends the hard way. I’m sure other salon owners can relate to some of these lessons.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would never have let my team know when money was so tight that I couldn’t take a paycheck. But let me tell you, every owner has most likely experienced a feeling of overwhelm. When a surprise 10k comes out because I didn’t keep track of my taxes better. When pipes froze and we had to close down, when there was a water backup for multiple days and couldn’t work, all the things that went wrong with my landlord, when taxes were filed wrong for over 2 years and the fees were so much that I had to take an accountant to court. The amount of money running a business actually takes. And the amount of money hiring a team of professionals to help run it smoothly actually takes - attorney, accountant, marketing, support, and more- And these are just a few of my struggles. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are things out of our control. But the one thing in our control is how you GROW from it. Give yourself and others grace. You never know what is truly going on behind the scenes. 🧡🧡

  • We are in a time where some of our beauty industry colleagues are starting to shut down there salons.

These are certain times cause for spiritual meditation and grounding to help navigate through these tough times.

One of the things I teach in my coaching is the importance of self-care as it relates to business. We don't always have to figure shit out, but if you find that you do, give yourself credit for even doing so. Pat your damn self on the back for doing what's best for you and your business.

Find something to help you release the spirit of heaviness. Cry it doesn't make you weak (men). It actually helps you release all the bs we hold on to be ours or the client's burden.

No matter what you are facing right now, get ready to pivot in business.

  • Hands down one of the scariest (but best) decisions I made when opening up my salon suite was investing in selling a retail line I felt really confident about.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
But the biggest lesson I’ve learned is - you can’t just sit your pretty products on a shelf and expect they will magically sell themselves… you have to spend equally as MUCH time on marketing your retail as you do your services!⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Not educating or suggesting retail to your clients is truly doing them a disservice - they are coming to YOU with their hair problems as a trusted expert, and you are offering a solution.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Which is why I’m so PUMPED to be co-teaching another @mane.circle Rocking Your Retail workshop! @kimberchapman_ and I have bundled all of our knowledge we’ve learned as soloprenuers (who are hitting 15%+ retail sales percentages) and teaching it all in a two hour workshop.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Wanna join us TOMORROW for Rocking Your Retail? It's your last chance to save your seat! And did I mention, you get unlimited access to the replay? 💁🏼 Send me a DM and I’ll hook you up with a link!⁣

  • Has being your own boss always been on your goal list?

It is amazing to be in charge of your destiny! I'm personally drawn to people who want to push themselves out of their comfort zone.

One thing I have noticed tho with renters is sometimes we get into a slump and when your self employed nobody is pushing you. It takes A LOT of will power to keep going for your dreams when you get into that slump. Until now, I've got the solution for you...

Hire an accountability coach to help keep you on track. It's ok to need help, you can't do it alone. I love connecting with stylists and helping them navigate their dreams. It's THEIR dreams, I help keep you on track to reaching them.

Message me if you need help with branding, creating goals, website design, raising your prices and so much more!

  • One of the biggest mistakes in service-based beauty, health & wellness businesses is being a jack of all trades and being a master of none.

When you are a do all person, you stretch yourself thin, overwork, underpaid and become burned out. I'm a firm believer in doing what you love, attract the clients you want to serve, and live the life you desire. One way to do that is to narrow down what you love to do.

  • Happy Thursday, gorgeous! 💜
.
This week, we are focusing upon referrals. The fourth step of referrals is to ask for them!
.
Don’t be afraid or ashamed to directly ask for referrals. Your clients will not know that you are open to them unless you say so. If your clients and clients are genuinely satisfied with your products or services, they will have no issue being those advocates for you and sending referrals your way.
.
When asking for referrals, be sure to share what your ideal clients profile looks like with your advocates. That way, you can ensure the referrals that make the most sense for your business are being sent your way.
.
Be sure to appreciate the feedback that your clients give you, but also know the right time to ask for a referral. If a client compliments your business and is enthusiastic about your services, it is perfectly fine to mention you are open to new clients and ask them if they know anyone who fits your ideal client profile.

  • Filling your chair with your dream clients

I hear far to often stylists complaining about their clients and honestly it makes me sad.

There is this misconception in the industry that you have to put up with so much shit from people.

I can confirm this is a lie.

You can fill your chair with people that fill your cup!

But how?

-Market to your dream client on social media! Figure out who this person is and talk to ONLY him/her in everything you post!

-Build a transparent relationship with your clients aka BOUNDARIES! Your guests should know your policies and how you work. Aways kept it 100 with them.

-Have policies and STICK TO THEM!! If you have a cancellation fee, actually charge it! If you have a late policy, enforce it!

You teach people how you want to be treated within your business behind the chair! It 100% starts with you!

Do you struggle with attracting your ideal clientele?

  • So I started a podcast series called ‘Money talk’ 🙌

I’ve been getting a lot of DM‘s about stylist wanting to open up a suite, or open up a Salon, or they are already are in business but they are feeling financially frustrated of where they are at.

I’m so excited that I was able to bring on Nina Tulio onto the podcast! Nina has been one of my mentors since I opened up Refined Beauty. She coached me on being intentional in my business, how to create policies, procedures, and percentages so I can stay on budget and get to my goal faster.

Tune into the Beauty Business Game-Changer podcast with me and Nina as we dive into a deeper conversation on money and business ownership.

She’s got a great new program out that she will tell you more about in the podcast so make sure to tune in! drop a comment below if you are a Nina Tulio fan 💛👏👍 @ninatulio

  • Throwing out some tough love here: when it comes to selling retail - Amazon and Ulta are not the problem. OLD sales tactics are!⁣⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
If you are using sales tactics that were successful before the social media age, chances are, you aren't reaching your best potential.⁣ ⁣
⁣⁣
Do you feel like giving up because Amazon is taking over? Do you feel like selling isn't even worth it because your client is just going to swing by Ulta after leaving your salon? Do you ask your clients if they want to take away any hair care products from their appointment, but they always turn you down?⁣⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Assuming your client will buy just because it’s sitting there is NOT gonna work anymore. To find out what does, check out the deets for our next workshop in our bio!⁣

  • Hey Friends,

One thing is for certain - stylists and barbers are not just stylists and barbers. We (yes I said we) are a community of individuals who are there for our clients through the good times and the worst of times.
✨
Not only do we make people look good, but we also make them feel good - or at the very least, better! ...and you have been making your clients feel better by keeping them safe during these unprecedented times - disinfecting and cleaning between customers as well as protecting them by wearing your masks.
✨
Unfortunately, you are not making as much money as you are accustomed to. COVID-19 has hit our industry particularly hard and because of that reason, I am always looking out to see how I can assist you on this journey.
✨
Right now, there is a grant that will award small business grants up to $10,000, prioritizing beauty salons and barber shops.
✨
To get the scoop click on my bio to sign up to become an Insider and I’ll send you the information! The deadline is closing soon!

That one client who seems to always ask for favours, exceptions, or begs you to bend the rules.
And you do. Because you care. Because you want to make them happy. Because the feeling of having someone unhappy with you, or upset or worse disappointed is unbearable.
I so get it. Besides it’s good- scratch that- great customer service to go the extra mile. And at first it ain’t so bad.
And then it happens again, and again, and again. And you start to feel like you don’t have a choice. You feel trapped in a cycle.
You feel used and taken advantage of, left without a choice. It’s frustrating and resentment starts to build. And still you continue to give them what they ask for.
I know that feeling all to well. And I hate th be bearer of bad news, but it’s our own fault.
WE TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO TREAT US.
the good new is you can turn it around in a way that still show kindness, compassion and empathy towards your clients.
Earn their respect and have them understanding and excited for you. 💗 if you’ve been here a while you know I’m passionate about helping other stylists build a career they love and feel in control with.
And I wanted to make sure to give you some tools to help ya through the up coming holiday season with ease.

  • 1 out of every 100 hairstylists will be financially successful😰
.
What do you think differentiates that 1% from the other 99? .
Definitely drive but what does that look like? Here are few activities to institute into your business to get you closer to success. .
1. Set Goals. Do you have an event coming up or something bigger like moving to a bigger home or buying a new car? How much do you need and by when? Break it down by month, then week, then days to know how much you need to bring in each day to meet your goal by the deadline date. You are more likely to accomplish your goals when you have a plan. I work with stylists in setting goals for their future. With me, you will learn how to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Trackable) goals that will help you in every part of building your business and your personal life.
.
2. Don’t be afraid of failing. We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our wins. Why? Because after a big win, most of us don’t dissect our moves to remember why we succeeded. We just cheer. But when you make a mistake...you bet we dissect what went wrong so we never feel that way again. Remember to be kind to yourself and know you will have many failures. You are human and those challenges needed to happen so that you could progress and become a powerhouse.
.

3. Don’t be afraid of change. Try something new every day or every week. If you are not always striving for a better way to get from A to Z, then you may become stagnant. Clients can feel that. Don’t be afraid to learn a new skill, take a class, change things up. That is how you get better.
.
4. Educate your Guest. Remember, you have been doing hair for however long and know way more about how to care for hair than most clients that sit in your chair. Think of it this way…when you buy a new blouse, the inside label explains the best way to care for that garment to keep it beautiful and wearable. Do you consider that label a hard sell? Absolutely not, so why be afraid of sounding “salesly?” It not only protects your work but it shows your guest you’re an expert & that builds confidence and trust. .

  • Soooo I have a confession to make ..With only one day left of 2019 I’m feeling grateful!!
💋
2019 was good to me , But I am going to confess that as I know growth comes after fear, Fear has always held me back from so many things.
🌟
Feeling fear is uncomfortable...& Comfort is exactly that.
🎉
So this Next Year I am calling on you!
💥[**taking it to church now]
Are you going to Push through Fear?
💥
Will you challenge yourself to get
uncomfortable???
💥

  • In tough times, I always ask myself: How can I see what I am experiencing as an opportunity for growth? ✨

With everything happening in our world right now, there's a ton of fear and anxiety going around. For us hairstylists, our livelihoods were literally taken away from us overnight and most of us are just trying to adapt to or new norm.
✨

I'm noticing that stylists are either choosing to stay stuck and angry about something that we have zero control over or they are stepping up and supporting one another with education, inspiration and probably some of the funniest memes ever!
✨

I get it...the unknown can be scary so I encourage you to focus on the silver lining even if it takes baby steps to get there. There must be something beautiful that is happening because of this sudden change that has impacted your career and life forever. Are you spending more time with your family? Is your body feeling better than it ever has? Are you able to work on projects that you've been putting off? Has it given you perspective of what's really important?
✨

Whenever I'm faced with challenges or stressful situations in my life or business, I always go back to this question and it almost immediately shifts my mindset. It helps me skip going into victim mode and takes me straight into taking full responsibility so that I can learn, grow, and be grateful for the lessons that have come out of it. Thank you, Next!
✨

Let's get on the other side of this stronger, smarter and more connected in our life and business. If you can possibly see or even get a glimpse of the fact that everything is happening for you and not to you, how can you see what you are dealing with now as blessing in disguise?
✨

Stay safe💛

  • I shared in an email with our @mane.circle community last week:⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
“2020 really has been the year of pivoting, right?”⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
As an enneagram type 3, who thrives on setting goals and crossing off a to-do list, who loves planning a vacation almost more than actually going on said vacation, who struggles sometimes with spontaneity - I’ve really had to LET GO of things going according to plan, and learn to pivot.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Earlier this year, I was planning on opening a salon. Nothing big, just a couple chairs, but it was going to be a pretty big financial investment. I went to go do a final walk through of the space prior to signing the lease - and I felt this visceral, full body reaction telling me “Don’t do this. Walk away, now.” I KNEW it wasn’t fear, but I couldn’t figure out what it was.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
My ego was angry and disappointed. But my heart + soul knew I was doing the right thing.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Flash forward three months later, COVID-19 hits, and salons are shut down. I honestly really don’t know if I would have been okay financially had I opened that salon. I’m so, so grateful my intuition steered me in the direction that was right for me. That I trusted my gut when it told me to pivot, even if I didn’t really understand it at the time.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
I have a feeling we aren’t done with having to change our directions, plans, or goals this year. But I can say: listen + trust your intuition when it’s trying to tell you something ✨ it’s usually always right.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Have you had anything like this happen this year, too?!

  • Do you ever feel guilty
taking a day off?🤔
•

When it comes to going on vacation or having a spa day, sign me up!
•

But, for some reason, when it comes to doing it during the week when typically I “should” be working or “should” be productive, I’m not gonna lie, a little bit of guilt shows up. WTH, right?!🤦🏻‍♀️
•

One great thing that has come out of this pandemic and having no option but to close the salon has been an extended vacation and lots of days off without guilt because it wasn’t my choice.
•

This pic was taken on a Wednesday, on a sailboat to watch the sunset, and I enjoyed every minute of it! (Aside from the rough waves in the beginning but nothing a bottle of Rosè couldn’t help🤩🍾)
•

To be honest, I would have NEVER taken this much time off voluntarily because quite frankly, I didn’t think I could.
•

Whatt I have learned is that time off is much needed (pandemic or not!)and there is zero reason to feel bad about it.
•

My body feels better, I feel more rested and I have had more time to grow my online business and help other hairstylists do the same so that they can create more revenues of money and avoid unexpected hits to their income as we are experiencing now.
•

Are you good about taking time off or does the guilt creep up for you too?

  • Don’t even get me started on how much money I’ve lost doing this the wrong way...⠀
.⠀
Finding a mentor is so important but what’s even more important is finding one whose been where you are at and made it through.
.⠀
I’m embarrassed to say I learned this the hard way. 🤦🏻‍♀️I spend thousands... yes thousands on the wrong mentor.⠀
.⠀
This is not a dig at them, they are amazing, hugely successful and have great wisdom, but they didn’t know my business, my industry, or my struggles. They didn’t get me.⠀
.⠀
When I started working with someone who got me there was a huge shift not only in my mindset but also in my pay check.
.
When you find a mentor whose walked in your shoes, whose fought the same battles and come out the other side and who totally gets you, there is magic.⠀
.⠀
For me finding that was a game changer.⠀
.⠀
I believe everyone needs a mentor, no matter what stage or phase of life and business we are in.⠀
.⠀
I know I will always have one.⠀
.⠀
The return is so worth it. Yes is scary to dish out money on these things. Especially when you invest in the wrong one (let my mistake help you not make the same one)⠀
.⠀
I talked the other day about accountability, it’s huge. Without the right mentors I wouldn’t have been able to tackle and achieve the things I have in the time that I have.⠀
.⠀
How do you find the right one when there are countless qualified teachers, educators and mentors out there?
.
Look for the one who get you, who you see have been through what you’re going through. The one who has overcome the obstacles you’re currently facing. ⠀
.⠀
And when you find them, keep them close. That is who will help you and together you will make the magic happen.⠀
.⠀
Swipe to hear more of my thoughts on this.⠀
.⠀
I’m curious have you ever worked with a mentor before? Tell me below⠀
