  • Seven different individuals of Van Dam's dragon-zonure (Smaug vandami) from a tiny relictual population far removed from the species' main distribution. These pictures were taken over a period of more than two years. A few nights ago temperatures dropped below freezing. They are hard to find in winter, but the two I spotted that afternoon were alive and well, safely nestled in their rock shelters.

  • Karoo gordelakkedis/ Kaaiman/ Karoo girdled lizard (by the way, lockdown gear for photos = cellphone held to a spotting scope)

Since the lockdown we have realised that one of these lizards is staying on a granite outcrop on the adjacent erf. Just like the two Karoo girdled lizards that a friend had pointed out to me on his farm, this/'our' lizard also sticks to a very specific spot on the outcrop. It sleeps in the same crack every night, comes out late morning to bask in the sun and does not move beyond a 1.5 square metre area. I have only once seen it run to the bottom of the boulder to catch an insect. Now obviously this guy will need to find a mate or a mate will find it (so they do move), but it is so amazing that these animals are so energy efficient that they can be this hyperlocalised.

My identification of this species as the melanistic (black) form of the Karoo girdled lizard was confirmed by Luke Kemp @fieldherper from #africansnakebiteinstitute. I can really recommend contacting these guys if you ever have an unidentified reptile. They are very friendly and helpful and super knowledgeable.

I recently painted the Black girdled lizard (Cordylus niger), it is very similar to the melanistic form of the Karoo girdled lizard (Karusasaurus polyzonus). The black girdled lizard is more localised with only a few recorded populations in the Langebaan area and the Cape peninsula however. As soon as lockdown is lifted to the point where I can go exploring again, you can bet on it, I will investigate the granite outcrops of Langebaan for this rare species.

  • Swart gordelakkedis/ Swart skurwejantjie/ Black girdled lizard

Every species on this planet has intrinsic value, but there is something about the girdled lizards that just captivate people. They look like bonzai dragons! All the species in this family have that 'it' factor. Due to their appearance they are very popular in the pet trade. Many species in this genus are poached by unscrupulous reptile collectors. Most of the lizards are destined to become part of some international reptile enthusiast's collection. (I just want to make a note that I'm not including legitimate reptile keepers, with the relevant permits, in the before-mentioned statement). The Black girdled lizard loves to sit on top of their rock for hours on end. Seemingly sungazing or just having a tan. They are very localised. I know of two specific Karoo girdled lizards, closely related to the Black girdled lizard, that I have not seen stray more than half a metre from their rock. The black colouration is an adaptation for thermoregulation in their specific habitat. They occur at higher elevations or close to the coast where the lizards are confronted by clouds and mist that hide the sun. So when the sun does appear a lizard with a black skin will heat up and be active faster than a lighter coloured competitor.
The Black girdled lizard is only found in a few isolated locations on the West Coast and on the Cape Peninsula. Many tourists get to view them on Table Mountain each year. They even live in some of the gardens in Cape Town apparently. It's interesting how, because something is right under our noses, we just assume it is not special or rare, but this little lizard deserves a second glance.

  • Stoked that my pic of an Armadillo Girdled Lizard won the "Bahaviour" section of our recent departmental photography competition. Looking forward to having one of my images featured on the wall in the foyer of the Rhodes Zoology and Entomology department again.

Even better that it will be next to a pic of two Black Rhinos taken by my sister, which won the "Endangered" section! Good form, Sisterchild 💪

This was a first for me I’ve never seen one of these lizards before.
•
I went for a walk after the rain last week and spotted these little lizards on a dead log.
•
I was shocked when I realized that they were some type of Girdled lizard and could not believe what I had found.
•
Keep an eye out for all the creatures out and about!

  • South Africa has an amazing diversity of reptile species and today we feature the awesome spiky critter known as the Armadillo Girdled Lizard Ouroborus cataphractus. Its scientific name means ‘armoured tail-eater’, but more about that later. In Afrikaans we call it a ‘Blinkogie’ (little bright-eye). They do have quite large and prominent eyes as far as lizards go. Most conspicuous of course are its ‘girdles’. Its scales are modified into plates ending in sharp spines that are arranged in rings around its body and tail.

The Armadillo Girdled Lizard occurs in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. It inhabits rocky habitats where it uses narrow crevices for shelter. It ranges from the Richtersveld southward to Piketberg and eastward to the Tankwa Karoo. In general, this is a very dry region that can get extremely hot during summer months. It is the spikiest member of its family; the spikes offer excellent protection in more ways than one. They protect its skin against bruises and cuts in the harsh rocky environment. If a predator comes across one in a crevice, the lizard will expand its body; the spikes will then wedge against the walls of the crevice making it almost impossible to extricate. But if it is caught off guard, it has another strategy – it rolls itself into a ball, grabbing its tail in its mouth like a real-world counterpart of the Ouroboros.
