  • Girdle book, miniature version! Stunning work by bookbinder Debra Frances @debra_frances
What is a girdle book? Jayson Ollerenshaw explains: “The term “girdle book” refers to a book that was bound in such a way that it had a “tail” that could be tucked into one’s girdle or belt. This left the book hanging upside down; when the wearer wanted to read the book, they simply picked it up and opened it. When the book was being read from a table or lectern, the tail would have draped down off the edge.” #girdlebook #bookbindersclub (Medieval Bookbinding)

  • A belt book in the making. This book is for an exhibition in Germany later this summer I am sharing with artists from Uist and from the Uckermark just north of Berlin. The theme of the exhibition is rock and water and I have chosen to answer to the theme of rock with this grey leather belt book which features details of my original 'rock' artist paper. - you wear this book on your belt ☺

  • LIBROS CURIOSOS Y ORIGINALES

Libros siameses – Siglo XVI

  • Sainte Barbe, 16th century, Saint Remi museum, Reims. Look at all those delicate book details !
Girdle books had leather or cloth continued loose beyond the edges of the hard cover. The loose edges could be wrapped round and often buckles enabled the book to be securely closed and carried around tucked into one's belt. Cloth binding tradition results directly from the use of a "manutergium", the name given to the lithurgical towel from the early years of Christianity, in order to avoid contact beween hands and the sacred artefact. These books were most of the time religious. The use of precious fabrics was rejected by monastic communities but was quite in fashion among rich lay people at the end of the Middle Ages -especially ladies. Some of the cloth covers were adorned with brass corner pieces and metal clasps, as seen here. Just a handful survived but you can find many examples in art.

  • Guardian of Sterile Waters
By Miriam Schaer
Brooklyn, New York: Miriam Schaer, [1997]. One-of-a-Kind.

12 x 20 x 6" sculptural bookwork. Materials: ladies' girdle, acrylic, ink, silk, sterile-water ampules, plastic toy laser print, ribbon.

Miriam Schaer: "Guardian of Sterile Water is the third and last of the three books I made to explore my infertility and issues around motherhood. Guardian was created after the treatments failed, using as art materials some of the leftover fertility drugs — specifically the ampules of sterilized water that was to be used in mixing Clomid and Perganol — infertility drugs that were commonly used in the late 90s. "Inside the bustier, there is a heart-shaped inset box, or cartouche, which holds a heart shaped book. The book's pages are collages of actual medical records complimented by images of infants. "The bottom of the heart is lined with broken bottles from the ampules of the sterilized water. All three deal with the urge to have a child – that is, to become a mother – and the coming to terms with its unlikelihood in my own life. "My work in this vein is chiefly a way of asking questions that explore feminine, feminist, and social issues that I sometimes think have no answers. So I try to make sense of things by making art."

  • And this is...? A girdle book!
The knot, which is part of the binding, was for you to stuck it under your belt and to carry it anywhere you would go. Long before the I-Phone, people from the 16th century were facing addiction... to books. This one is from 1508. "Flaps were cut into the front and back of the exterior cover so that the imprint on the leather binding underneath became visible. Girdle books were common in the Netherlands and Germany between about 1400 and 1550."
(The National Library of Sweden).
