  • Daniel Day-Lewis takes method acting to another level

To simulate Bill the Butcher's fake eye, Daniel Day-Lewis had his own eyeball covered in prosthetic glass. Day-Lewis learned to tap his fake eye with the tip of a knife without blinking.
This scene where Bill the Butcher taps his glass eye was ad-libbed.

.
Note @allocine : 4/5
Note @senscritique : 6,9/10
Et vous, quelle note lui donneriez-vous ? 🐱🍿📽

  • GANGS OF NEW YORK de Martin Scorsese avec Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis et Cameron Diaz (2003)

Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
—
I am not enjoying this list yet. Alice is a movie with a nice score, good direction, good performances especially from Burstyn (one of the most underrated actresses) and Kristofferson. The story is simple and easy to watch, but also provides some powerful emotional moments. It’s just another one that did nothing for me. It didn’t really make an impression on me, I don’t remember much of what happens in the film and I don’t think it would even be something I’d ever go back to. More so than Kun-dun because it’s not as dull and it’s much more compelling, but just not memorable as a film, especially compared to Scorsese’s other films. But for what it is, it’s a solid movie, one with good messages, good performances and a really nice score too. This is the first film on this list I could recommend to someone, especially Scorsese fans.

  • It is not hard to find symbolic meaning in Martin Scorsese’s use of bloody red hues. His scarlet palette underscores the emotional distress or excitement, the danger, the despair or the sheer violence of his characters. The color red becomes a visual exclamation mark, signaling heightened emotions. This is perhaps clearest when Scorsese dissolves shots into a completely red frame, using the abstraction of color to comment on the emotional state of his protagonists.

  • THE PERFECT AMERICAN ALEGORY: I posit that Gangs of New York is Scorsese's best film. It's loaded with little subplots and minute details that come to light upon third, fourth, and fifth viewings. While the characters are only loosely based on real people or entirely fictionalized, save for Boss Tweed, the film is otherwise historicaly accurate to impressive detail. Leo came at his role with a dedication that would come to define his career as he fought to shake off the post-Titanic "pretty boy A-lister" tag (GONY was filmed 3 years after Titanic). Even so, Leo was eclipsed entirely by Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal of Bill the Butcher. Bill exists in history books somewhere between urban legend and fact, we know he existed but the recorded details of his life are scant and difficult to confirm. Day-Lewis fleshed out The Butcher like he had spent weeks with the guy. He sculpted a character both menacing and alluring. When Bill the Butcher is on screen, he's in the room with you and you're simultaneously too scared to make eye contact but too fascinated to look away. Above all, Scorsese depicted a country divided along cultural and nationalistic lines. America was a country divided against itself as much in the streets of NYC as it was on the battlefields of the Civil War. We are all in our gangs, whether we admit it it not, and the warfare has never ceased. 🇺🇸
