  • This image of the titanium nameplate on the robotic arm of NASA's Mars Perseverance rover was taken at a payload servicing facility at the agency's Kennedy Space Center soon after being attached on March 4, 2020. The plate serves as rock and debris shield to protect a flexible cable that carries power and data from computers in the rover's body to actuators in the arm, as well as to the instruments and the drill in the turret. The laser-etched plate weighs 104 grams (3.7 ounces) and measures 17 inches long by 3.25 inches wide (43 centimeters long by 8.26 centimeters wide).

The plate was cut using a waterjet, and the surface was coated with black thermal paint before a computer-guided laser generated the name "Perseverance" by ablating paint from the surface. (The video below shows the process, speeded up 3,000 times.) The nameplate was attached to the rover on March 4, 2020.

  • SpaceX is now the largest satellite manufacturer of all time! They build about 1400 satellites every year for their Starlink network! It's also possible that they're going to increase production in a few years when Starlink is in Phase 2 (12000 new Starlink satellites) or 3 (40000 new Starlink satellites).

  • Space Shuttle launches STS-121 in what was considered a significant mission to fully resume regular Space Shuttle launches after the Columbia disaster. The main purposes of the mission were to test new safety and repair techniques introduced as well as to deliver supplies and equipment during the construction of the ISS. STS-121 was also designated the ISS Assembly Mission ULF 1.1. As the mission followed on from STS-114 in carrying out the recommendations made in response to the Columbia Accident Investigation Board report, it was considered a Return to Flight test mission.⁣
•⁣
NASA’s Space Shuttle will always be an iconic symbol of humanity’s pursuit towards the stars, without it, construction of the ISS would have not been possible as no other launch vehicle had the same capabilities in terms of transporting cargo and crew at the same time. I also will never get tired of seeing the RS-25’s start up and come to full power before T-0. These same RS-25 engines will be used on NASA’s future moon rocket SLS and they will serve another meaningful purpose to return humans to the moon in 2023. ⁣

  • Series on Space Shuttle: Part 11
Topic: Columbia Disaster Investigation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unlike commercial jet aircraft, the space shuttles did not have flight data recorders intended for after-crash analysis. Instead, the vehicle data were transmitted in real time to the ground via telemetry. Since Columbia was the first shuttle, it had a special flight data OEX (Orbiter EXperiments) recorder, designed to help engineers better understand vehicle performance during the first test flights. The recorder was left in Columbia after the initial Shuttle test-flights were completed, and it was still functioning on the crashed flight. It recorded many hundreds of parameters, and contained very extensive logs of structural and other data, which allowed the CAIB (Columbia Accident Investigation Board) to reconstruct many of the events during the process leading to breakup.
The foam impact tests were performed in which a compressed air gun was used to fire a foam block of similar size and mass to that which struck Columbia, at the same estimated speed.
Over many days, dozens of the foam blocks were shot at the wing leading edge model at various angles. These produced only cracks or surface damage to the RCC panels.
Further analysis of information from Columbia's flight data recorder narrowed the probable impact site to one single panel: RCC wing panel 8. In a final round of testing, a block fired at the side of an RCC panel 8 created a hole 41 by 42 cm in that protective RCC panel. The tests demonstrated that a foam impact of the type Columbia sustained could seriously breach the thermal protection system on the wing's  leading edge.
  • With DEMO-2 successfully completed, Crew Dragon is now ready for operational crewed flights. CREW-1 will be the first of these missions, scheduled for NET October 23rd, 2020. CREW-1 will be carrying NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Japanese Science Officer, Soichi Noguchi. They will spend six months on the station..They will fly on a brand new, yet to be named Crew Dragon, and new Falcon 9. After Crew-1 on the following crewed missions, SpaceX will be allowed to reuse both the Crew Dragon Spacecraft and the Falcon-9 first stage booster for crewed missions.
  • El fabricante chino de baterías CATL ha anunciado que está trabajando en una nueva tecnología que permite incorporar las celdas de la batería de un coche eléctrico directamente en el chasis del vehículo. Esta disposición evitaría el obligado empaquetamiento que hoy en día reciben las baterías cuyas celdas, agrupadas en módulos, se instalan en el interior de una carcasa estanca, muy resistente y refrigerada a la que se somete a todo tipo de pruebas de seguridad. Por esta razón, las baterías de los coches eléctricos son tan voluminosas y tan pesadas, lo que repercute en la eficiencia y en el precio final de los vehículos.
• Much taller
• Much wider
• Capable of auto-leveling and landing on uneven surfaces
• Similar to Falcon's legs
