  • Starship Development Series, Part 7.
Topic: Starship Re-entry cooling (Contd)

Yesterday, we understood the working of Ablative material in cooling a spaceship during re-entry. We got some questions related to radiation, convection and conduction. So an intermediate post here.

Reentry heating comes from two primary sources—

1. Convective heating from both the flow of hot gas past the surface of the vehicle & catalytic chemical recombination reactions at the surface.

2. Radiation heating from the energetic shock layer in front of the vehicle.

As reentry speed increases, both convective & radiation heating increases. Convective heating is proportional to the velocity cubed, while radiative heating is proportional to the velocity exponentiated to the eighth power. YES 8th power!! At high speeds, radiation heating can quickly dominate. Also an increase in effective vehicle radius decreases convective heating but radiation heating increases.

Radiative heating thus predominates very early in the atmospheric entry while convection predominates in the later phases.

In the next post, we will cover the other methods used in Thermal protection systems (TPS).

  • With the recent award of the National security space launch (NSSL) contracts to SpaceX and ULA, the launch pad at 39a in Florida will be transformed to look like this image found at nextspaceflight.com

"The third flight, USSF-67, was assigned to SpaceX and is slated to launch in the fourth quarter of 2022. 
For its two missions, ULA will receive $337 million. SpaceX will receive $316 million for its mission"

"SpaceX’s current payload fairings are 5.2 m in diameter and 13.1 m tall. The larger NSSL fairings for Falcon Heavy are expected to be about 5.4 m in diameter and 18.6 m tall. Once developed, the larger fairings can be use for non-NSSL missions of the Falcon Heavy as well."
.
The contract provides the funding to build a mobile vertical payload integration tower at 39a.  It also gives the green light to move forward on the larger fairing. A big win for the composites team in Hawthorne, Ca.

Great news for SpaceX!

One thing is sure...the ULA Vulcan is the result of SpaceX changing the industry. ULA will finally move to American made rocket engines and away from the Russian RD-180 engine. ULA will start using the BE-4 engine from Blue Origin and the Vulcan Centaur rocket will move toward reusability. That is good for all of us 🇺🇸

  • Russia’s space program @roscosmosofficial is looking to develop new space vehicles for manned spaceflight. One of the options being considered is a concept for a shuttle based on the old Soviet ‘Buran’ to replace Soyuz. ⁣

Buran was in many instances very similar to the American space shuttles, except Buran only made one successful orbital flight before the program was shutdown. Buran was also entirely automated, it’s flight computers took charge of the entire mission, from takeoff, separation and landing, it completed it without a hitch. ⁣

Although Roscosmos is already developing a new state-of-the-art spacecraft named “Oryol” for missions to the moon, expenses have piled up for the agency that it has provoked new options for cheaper methods of transport to future space stations.⁣

2 days back we covered the Layman's explanation of "What is full-flow staged combustion cycle" of Raptor Engine. Let's build on it further. 

The two pre-burners of Raptor Engine operate at non-optimum fuel to oxygen ratio. One being fuel-rich and other being oxygen-rich, powering the respective pumps. Fuel being used is Methane.

Q: Why Methane?

A: For the fuel-rich pre-burner, RP-1 can't be used as the exhaust (which has to go through the combustion chamber is not clean, with a significant presence of unburnt carbon. The other alternative Hydrogen requires higher volume tanks due to much lesser density and high molar ratios needed for combining with one unit of Oxygen. Methane gives cleaner exhaust and is closer to RP1 in density and fuel-oxygen ratios. Further in many other parameters, Methane performs in between RP1 and Hydrogen.

The other thought of the possibility of Methane being easy to manufacture on Mars by Sabatier process (used in ISS), while true, is not necessarily the cited reason.

Q: Is it best?

A: See, whatever SpaceX does (and will do), people will find a reason to say that their engine is the best & nothing could be better. When Merlin came out, a ton of articles was highlighting the best features (Thrust to weight) of that and now the same happens for Raptor (high thrust).

The thing to keep in mind is - for their specific requirement of a reliable, low cost, cheaper fuel, availability, they have "found" raptor to be "best suited" for. That doesn't make it "THE BEST". For example, when Merlin came out, many of you might not have even heard of chamber pressure thing. And now for Raptor, the highest chamber pressure is praised everywhere. (Merlin has got one of the lowest value for that)

Q: What is chamber pressure?

A: Consider it as the average pressure before the throat. Where it is exactly measured - at the tip of the injector or before combustion or after combustion - varies from firm to firm. F-1 measured at injector end. The important thing is higher the value, higher the thrust with potential to decrease engine size.
