  • My favourite random archaeological facts about NYC: 🌇
🌃
1- An unfortunate one to start with- The Underground Railroad apparently went around Manhattan because of Manhattan’s ties to the South. For those who don’t know the Underground Railroad wasn’t underground or a railroad but secret routes, safe houses and meeting spots for slaves trying to escape the south. ‘Underground’ in this context means secret or clandestine and ‘railroad’ simply cos they used railroad terminology eg ‘stations’ to describe the various safe houses along the way, ‘conductors’ were the guides etc etc 🌃
🌇
2- A lot of Lower Manhattan was built on landfill 🌃
🌇
3- Manhattan was once green and full of incredible wildlife (I know that is most cities but the juxtaposition between that and today’s concrete jungle still blows my mind... I know I’m simple)
🌃
🌇
4- There’s a mass grave of British soldiers in NYC and nobody knows where... but they are looking for it. 🌃
🌇
5- Before colonial settlers Manhattan was the home of Lenape Native Americans who are/were matrilineal (family identity goes through the mother) (TBH I always become slightly depressed when I read about the plight of Native Americans, the original inhabitants of that land)
🌃
🌇
6- Broadway unlike the rest of the streets in Manhattan isn’t on a grid... because it’s the first street/thoroughfare the Dutch settlers put down and so just like in older cities in Europe it isn’t on a strict north south or east west grid

Anyone got any others?

Love this place and my two visits last week... I have this daydream about being based between London, New York and a cave here, there and everywhere. #everydaynewyork #explore #archaeology #urbanarchaeology

  • • One of my favorite walks is to cross Central Park and bump into this view at 60th street. Right when the calm ends and midtown hustle begins 🚕🌿 • BTW, I posted a short IGTV video from this walk ! Check it out ☺️ •

  • My fourth time in NY and I finally got to see more of it beyond the limited three days I’ve always ended up spending here. To sum up the week: lots of walking, heat, overload of people, and neighbourhood discoveries. The food made the trip though. Oh, and of course getting to see @that_quiles_guy again. ☺️
