  • 's first online purchase is...*drumroll* a book of course! Got Henry Marsh's Admissions: A Life in Brain Surgery on #BookXcess because 1) I enjoyed his other book Do No Harm that I read last year 2) buying on #bookxcess is super cheap 3) I actually do wanna read this book.
Henry Marsh is a neurosurgeon who writes collections of short essays based on his experiences and observations. They're not exciting page turners but they're nice to pick up and read during gaps of spare time in a day. (e.g. I finished Do No Harm mostly on the MRT when I can't sleep and the bus stop.)

  • Intimations by Zadie Smith ✍🏻
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
-
“Trying to preserve some ‘space for yourself’ in the crowded domestic sphere feels like obsessively cupping your hands around thin air. You carve it out, the time you need, after much anxiety and debate, and get into the separate space and look between your hands and there it is - nothing. An empty victory.”
-
‘Intimations’ is a book of six essays by novelist Zadie Smith, all written since the start of lockdown and musing on topics including peonies, platonic love, neighbourliness, writing, personal space and time and everything that’s been thrown into the wind by lockdown.
-
I read most of these essays sitting in the still summer air under leaves that are usually full of birdsong but which had been silenced by the heat. It was ideal to sit in stillness for this because they’re worth your full attention, and Smith’s characteristic virtuosity - sweeping in and out from the personal and idiosyncratic to the broad and universal - supplies a feeling of breathtaking movement.
-
This was the first time I’ve read Smith’s essays and I feel like I’ll come back to them numerous times, not just in lockdown but afterwards too. They made me laugh and they made me think in new ways about problems that have been on my mind for a long time, as well as habits of my own I’d not thought about at all. Even if you’re not usually interested in essay collections I would recommend this book, because it is short and sweet and the kind of thing you can hand to your grandkids when they ask about the pandemic and tell them to leave you to your bridge or solitaire or whatever ‘space’ it is that you’ve constructed for yourself in the busy altered future.

  • ℋℯ𝓁𝓁ℴ 𝓉𝒽ℯ𝓇ℯ!

I know just how daunting a task writing those essays for postgraduate admission could be - the sleepless nights of trying to find the right words, the anxiety of not having enough words or not knowing what to cut down, the fear of “What if my essays are not good enough?” I can relate with all those feelings and I want to help you.

The interesting thing is that I don’t find essay writing daunting, my friends think I’m quite critical when I review their essays and it would be my absolute delight to help you with your essays.

My name is Praise Adeyemo @praise_adeyemo and I’m the face behind @prinade_essayreviews.

  • Such a fascinating, fantastic collection of essays- each exploring the journeys of those who were part of the Windrush generation, or the experiences of their children and grandchildren. It was hugely eye opening to me to see both the similarities and differences in the experiences of those who travelled from the Caribbean to England, answering the call for help and in hope of a better life. Also interesting to hear about the women of Windrush, often overlooked in popular recounts.
I read this as part of the #readingwomenchallenge.

  • The Accidental Universe by Alan Lightman🪐
So this book is a collection of 7 essays about the world and universe around us. Academic in nature but also filled with anecdotes and personal opinion to make it more digestible to a general audience. I bought this book years ago when my passion for physics ran high, I still love it. I’m not the smartest and I don’t fully comprehend everything, however it is so interesting and intriguing. The differences in understanding our universe through either scientific evidence and religious beliefs. I think it’s thought provoking, definitely needs a reread at some point in the future to ensure I fully understand. I think it’s worth a read but honestly only if you want to broaden your horizons and have the attention span to focus on it. I wouldn’t recommend to read this when you’re tired like I did but it’s still fascinating. If I was to add ratings to my book reviews, I’d probably say 3 stars just because I know it’s something that is easily digestible en mass. (Plus I couldn’t find a Perfect spot for a picture but this was the best I could do) #books #bookstagram #author #reader #reading #bookish #stimulating #interesting #booksofinsta #booksofinstagram #2020reads #alanlightman #theaccidentaluniverse #bookrecommendation #bookrecommendations #bookrec #bookrecs #tbr #nonfiction #educational #physics #academic #universe #space #religion #discussions #essays

  • How to make a case study?

Writing a case study is an essential part of your tertiary life. Oftentimes, it is assigned as a prerequisite of a subject you take in college, mostly business related ones. It serves as a learning tool that allows students to have a better understanding of a concept and put theory in practice – using real-life events to analyze and solve a problem.

When writing the case study, you will be required to investigate a business problem, analyze all the possible solutions, and use relevant evidence to propose the best solution to the problem.

  • *REVIEW* My copy of Zadie Smiths Intimations arrived yesterday, and I gulped it down all at once. I couldn’t help it. I thought I might stretch it out - one essay a day for a week, a treat at the end of every evening. But no, I just couldn’t. As is the way with Zadie, once I started I just couldn’t stop.

*

This is a tiny volume really, just six short essays written at the beginning of the pandemic, just as the world was locking down - the beginning of what she so beautifully calls “the global humbling”. It’s about as contemporary as it gets - the pieces reference George Floyd, Domenic Cummings, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, a new world on the brink of a reckoning. She’s ruthless in her examination of this time, and the in particular the two countries she calls home - America and England. One sentence can pierce you with its clarity, it’s accuracy. A writer like Zadie holds no prisoners, not even herself: she examines her own reactions as much as anyone’s.

*

It would do the book a disservice to dissect its pages because you should read it for yourself - and I can heartily recommend it - but I *will* say that the longest essay was one of my favourites. It’s an essay in parts really, and in each part she takes a different, random person from her life and creates a character study of sorts, through the lens of this pandemic. Just wonderful writing. The whole volume is only some 80 pages, but she’s a class act. I’ll be re-reading soon, drinking it in more slowly, and no doubt absorbing more. Come tell me if you’re planning to read this 💫

  • I've reached my reading goal already, I wouldn't ever imagined I could read 40 books before December. Maybe because I've read many interesting books and read-along some others, anyway I still have more good ones for this autumn/winter so my reading challenge isn't actually completed.

Today is my day off, so I went to buy something to eat for breakfast, had a coffee and collected my thoughts together on my latest reads. The Land Where Lemons Grow it's really a nice and insightful book, I recommend it to everybody who loves Italy and its citrus, of course. Then I pick up Summer and other essays by Albert Camus, the prose is so poetic, melancholic and sensuous, if you have read something by Camus already I also recommend you these essays: Summer, The Sea Close by, Nuptials, and his notebook to discover a more sympathetic and intimate Camus.

What's your favourite latest reading?

  • I've reached my reading goal already, I wouldn't ever imagined I could read 40 books before December. Maybe because I've read many interesting books and read-along some others, anyway I still have more good ones for this autumn/winter so my reading challenge isn't actually completed.

  • 🍂 Non-fiction books 🍂

Here are some non-fiction books I absolutely love! I definitely read more fiction than non-fiction, but I can't resist a good book of essays!

✒ Genius and Ink - Virginia Woolf on How to Read: I adore this brilliant collection of critical essays written by Virginia Woolf for the Times Literary Supplement. I wholeheartedly recommend it, and I treasure each and every word of Woolf's writing.

✒ A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women by Siri Hustvedt: in this three-part collection of essays, that feels simultaneously deeply personal and universal, Hustvedt examines and discusses perception, art and art theory, literary theory, sexuality, creativity, gender issues, feminism, intellect, culture, the mother-daughter relationship, womanhood, the human condition, sciences, philosophy, and the delusion of certainty. It's an utterly brilliant and complex book, that creates a lot of questions, and has given me precious food for thought.

✒ The Ode Less Travelled by Stephen Fry: what can I say about Fry? I love him! This book was recommended to me by one of my University tutors, and I can't thank her enough! I am obsessed with poetry, and this book is a true treasure: metre, rhyme, form, scansion, poetics today are all there for you to discover! It, also, includes poetry exercises, and a wonderful introduction (definitely read it before you read the book -- I, many times, read the introduction after I've read the book!)

✒ How do we know we're doing it right? by Pandora Sykes: In this equally informative and entertaining collection of essays, Sykes discusses a lot of aspects and anxieties of the modern millennial life. The book is filled with sharp observations and thorough research, and I loved the author's references to other authors/researchers, and the variety and diversity of opinions expressed in the book.

  • BOOK REVIEW 🍂

Thank you so much @penguinrandomhouse for sending this free copy of Zadie Smith’s Intimations my way!

Swing Time was the first Zadie Smith novel I read and also happened to be the very first book I received from a publisher. I didn’t enjoy Swing Time at all, where I found it to be beautifully written, I was also extremely bored by it. However, I have still been interested in reading more of her work.

I finished this one today. Intimations is a collection of Smith’s short personal essays written at the inception of the quarantine. Permeated throughout each essay is Smith’s softhearted, funny and emotional introspection as she’s processing life’s foundational and existential questions.

Reading her essays made me reflect on my own ebb and flow in our current climate. In the beginning of quarantine I was thriving. I had no problem sitting with myself, basking in the little things and processing my feelings. Where others complained of boredom, I saw the opportunity to self improve; to try to grow in some area or in some way. Then when the civil unrest began, that was interrupted. It caused me to lose sight of the little things so I began to feel a heaviness - a weight that both belonged and didn’t belong to me and so I HAD to be MORE intentional about my time, my energy and my peace.

This one is all of 97 pages. I personally didn’t find these collection of essays “deeply” moving but I like that they made me reflect on my own sense of self & how I’ve processed my feelings during these unorthodox times.

  • (#gifted @librofm) I went on somewhat of a non-fiction audiobook kick in July, and honestly they were all great! The Groom Will Keep His Name by Matt Ortile is a collection of essays arranged in a sort of memoir. Ortile reflects on all sorts of aspects of his life so far, but mainly on sex, power and the model minority myth.
.
I loved how open and honest Ortile is throughout the book. He bares all when it comes to relationships, from Grindr to steam room encounters at his gym, and he lays his learning and unlearning for everyone to see. As a young boy, Ortile moved from the Philippines to the US with his mother, where he then grappled with his identity as a gay Filipino immigrant. He outlines his journey thus far to decolonising his mind, from originally wanting to marry a white man and erase his Filippino name to unpacking later relationships with white men and the ways they might think about him.
.
The essays have a distinct millennial flavour which I enjoyed - the essay structured around the time he started crying while eating a individual pecan pie really resonated for some reason. But although he makes jokes and funny observations, the book was a lot more serious than I anticipated, and I liked it all the more for it. I did think some of the essays overlapped a bit. It wasn’t quite repetitive, but maybe it could have been tighter as a straightforward memoir narrative.
.
Ortile’s musings on the model minority myth were particularly compelling. The system is designed to keep BIPOC pitted against one another, while white people remain comfortable at the top. I also loved his point on selective forgetting in America, and the west in general. White people are so keen to remind others 'never forget' when the tragedy concerns white suffering and death, but slavery? Genocide? Internment camps? That's all in the past, can't we just ‘forget about it already?’
.
Ortile is only young and as he himself says, still has a lifelong journey of unlearning and decolonising to do. I'd definitely read another collection of essays from him later in life!

  • This is one of those iconic books a woman must read. The cutting, ironic tone of Woolf's writing is intense and elaborate for a topic that is still actual under some aspect. In A Room of One's Own, Woolf underlines the exclusion of women from the history, and not only in literature, partially emphasized also in Three Guineas, focusing though, on the patriarchal relationship between men and women, and the unequal distribution of power between the genders.

A Room of One's Own was published in 1929, and is the result of two conferences held in Newnham and Girton the year before it was written. In this literary essay she discusses important topics about women's access to education and professional works, creating a fictional characters like Shakespeare's sister to illustrate that a woman with the same writing's gift, or even better than him, won't have the same notoriety as his brilliant brother, being subject to numerous restrictions.

Three Guineas instead is a work of non-fiction published in June 1938: The book is composed of Woolf's responses to a series of letters between her and an educated gentleman who has written a letter asking Woolf to join his efforts to help prevent war. Her essay's is an attempt to analyse fascism as patriarchal and anti-feminist movement.

  • This is the first book I read as a teenager. Its marks are noticeable after 18 years in which it has accompanied me to different places.⁣
⁣
👴🏻Ernesto Sabato, whom you may know from books like "The Tunnel" or "On Heroes and Tombs", was a very wise man who began his life as a successful scientist and then made a turn towards writing and art.⁣
⁣
📝The author says: "I ask you to stop to think about the greatness to which we can still aspire if we dare to value life differently. I ask for that courage that places us in the true dimension of human being."⁣
⁣
🗣Ernesto Sabato sends a hopeful message to the ocean of individualism and existential poverty in which we navigate through these times. And his word is a call to resist.⁣
⁣
📚The Resistance is a book for those who know how to read the symbols that abyss between oneself and the universe: lack of communication, worship of oneself, reverence for the media gods, dehumanized work, the empire of the machine over being, submission and overcrowding, the growing feeling of orphanhood, fierce competition and apocalyptic vertigo in which all possibility disappears.⁣
⁣
💭So the question is: how to resist? "We are in time to reverse this abandonment and this massacre. This conviction must possess us until the commitment... the human being knows how to make new paths from obstacles because life needs only a crack to be reborn."⁣✨
