  • Good morning & Happy Birthday America! The most patriotic thing we can do today is to avoid parties and gatherings so that we may gather another day. Remember, the virus continues to live if we give it the opportunity. It's just good ol' common sense. #avoidgatherings #coviddays

  • Lockdown: Day 35: 26 April 2020.

I stumbled upon this wonderfully COVID moment at the bottom of my road during a Sunday family cycle ride during lockdown. Queens Road, which is normally thronging with traffic, was completely quiet. During these strange times, everyone was seeking solace wherever they could find it, and this scene summed it up perfectly for me.

This picture has been included in EPUK’s COVID-19 Lockdown Showcase, see it at EPUK.org

  • The last 4 months was difficult in many ways and I liked the challenges I had! But now I’m at home and it’s Heaven.

Had a lifetime experience in these days and a lot of new friends. Cheers to all those who got to know me! Oh yeah, Delhi quarantine was fun😜

  • Last month we ran a ‘GiveSomeHappy’ campaign for the children on the wards at Mater Dei. Due to COVID19, children were a lot more isolated - no visitors, no playroom, and very minimal contact. We are very familiar with hospital days and they are not easy on an average day, let alone during this time. So we ran a campaign with the help of our friend Claire Catanzaro asking for donations of craft kits and through @happyplayco we offered one MiniPack of HappyPlay dough for every 2 HappyTubs sold. We were overwhelmed with the response! .
Not only did we receive craft kits but people purchased our play dough to be donated entirely to the hospital. I was not expecting that at all. .
Not only did the donations help bring some happy to children, but it also helped our small business! And we can’t thank you enough. .
Little did we know that Henry would end up in the same position a few weeks later and he would also make use of these craft kits first hand. We have had many hospital stays, and this one was a little harder without visitors to help bring some smiles, but we also managed with the incredible dedication of @drklown as well as a special call from Super Mario from @hip_hip_hurrah who also donated time.
.
Yesterday we were so happy to finally take over one half of the play dough donated, along with other craft kits. Henry was thrilled to be on the outside of the hospital and more thrilled to be giving Claire all the things to pass on to the children. .
I created HappyPlay Co. with the goal of developing key products and tools that will serve to enhance childhood through the play experience while encouraging happiness and positivity. Over the years I have learned that mental health and quality of life is as important as physical health and our own experiences are in the essence and foundation of HappyPlay Co. - we want to return this back out into the world.
.
I think we are off to a good start. .

  • ⁣”Get back!” I shouted at my sons running down the sidewalk to greet me after my first shift with a patient positive for COVID-19. It was early March, and though I had suspected many other patients to have COVID-19, we did not yet have enough tests and were required to follow a strict testing algorithm. Having a patient who actually met criteria and tested positive was a reality check. My children stopped in their tracks. Two cried. When had they ever been told to “get back” from me? I had practiced safety at work but hadn’t yet figured out how to get into my house safely. With four children and an immuno-compromised husband at home, I panicked under the enormity of the possible effects of getting this wrong. ⁣
⁣
Although I may be one of the faces treating COVID-19 patients, my family has been heroic in all of this. Front line families have had to adapt to a level of co-existence with COVID-19 that feels in line with our definition of “safe.” Some emergency medicine colleagues are living in separate rooms in their houses or have moved into separate apartments. A few have decided to take leave from work, and thus income, until they have more information on the risks and how to mitigate them. All of our families have adjusted to the uncertainties that come with a new virus. They have stood by ready to listen when we need to mourn the dead or dying. They have listened to us scream and rail at the chaos, inequities, and injustices that this disease has exposed within society and the healthcare system. They have respected silence when we cannot put words or voice to the troubles in our hearts. They have embraced chances to help us actively find joy at a time when tragedy and fear dominate. Front line families are the definition of resilience.⁣ ⁣
“This is what we do” was my awkward response the first time someone said, “Thank you for your service.” The sudden attention as a hero in a fight or a soldier in a war has been strange. COVID-19 has driven to the spotlight what we do as emergency physicians: care for someone on what arguably might be their worst day, no matter the circumstances. We have always been there, ready...(continued in the comments)

  • We did it. 😳
.
We made it through 3 months of remote learning, working from home. I had only returned to teaching for 2 months after my maternity leave...only to suddenly be back home again for three months. What a completely bizarre, unpredictable turn of events. 🤷🏻‍♀️
.
There were many hard days. Screen exhaustion. Anxiety and uncertainty about the future. Wondering if we would make ends meet and having to lay off our nanny. 💔
.
And suddenly, 12 weeks are over and summer is here. We survived and we made do. We adapted and we leaned on each other for support. And most importantly, we were both home to raise our daughter and we both got to be there when she took her first steps. 👶
.
We will never forget this time or this year. We will always look back on it and remember that it was love that got us through. ❤️
.
For anyone else that has been counting down the days...congratulations!! I hope you also feel stronger as a result. 🙏 Happy summer to all teachers and students for getting through the hardest term many of us have ever experienced. 💪
