  • @619.clothing It’s white America’s Independence Day, but for most of us, it’s 19-Days-After-Juneteenth today. And while we don’t wish to minimize the relevance of what these holidays mean to many of you, on July 4th, 1776, we were still slaves, and here in 2020 some 244 years later, not a lot has changed. Here’s a recap of the civil war we’re fighting everyday for our lives and freedom. This is just from this year, so far.

We are sixnineteen.

@619.clothing is not for the conformist, not for the faint of heart. Aptly names to honor Juneteenth (sixnineteen), we make apparel and accessories that celebrate Black culture, legacy, and freedom. Period. Shop, share, and support https://619.clothing/

#Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates a promise that was the beginning of a struggle against an unjust system. It is a day that honors Black freedom and resistance, and centers Black people’s unique contribution to the struggle for justice in the U.S., which includes the more than 4.3 million Black immigrants currently living in the country.
So let’s step back and think about that...because contrary to popular - mainstream - belief, immigration is decidedly, a Black issue. For the 2nd year, Cameroon has topped the list of the most neglected crisis on the planet and yet, many people have no idea of the conflict or of the hundreds of Cameroonians, Haitians, and Congolese (among others) applying for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Black immigrants make up a substantial number of #DACA recipients as well. Almost 30% of the families detained at Karnes Detention Center over the course of the last 6 months have been Haitian. And while Black immigrants make up only 7.2% of the non-citizen population in the U.S., they make up 20.3% of immigrants facing deportation. ~
So while it’s obvious that there is systemic racism at play within the U.S. immigration system...it’s kept relatively quiet as folks are lumped together as people of color (POC), which is color blindness in itself. Most immigrants portrayed in the media (and even highlighted in the immigrant rights sphere) are non-Black Latinx, when the reality is vastly different.
So let this be a call for everyone (including us) to acknowledge the need to prioritize Black immigrants and non-Spanish speaking immigrants who are often left out of the immigrant narrative. Let’s continue to fight for systemic change & Black liberation on all fronts, immigration included. Celebrating Juneteenth is recognition of solidarity in reaching shared, permanent results. The struggle continues, and we will celebrate the inevitable end of that struggle together. #DontLookAway

Happy Juneteenth, (in New Zealand)!! for those who are unaware it is the celebration of enslaved African in America learning about the emancipation proclamation and their subsequent freedom. first you should know this was AGES after they were technically free. you should also know the U.S.A PAID ENSLAVERS REPARITIONS for the inconvenience of losing the Civil war and having to give up slavery. and this brings me to my point. Black Joy is Revolution! everyday we cultivate FREEDOM inside the temple of our own familiar (shout out to Alice Walker) we are actively liberation making. we are manifesting the world we are to bring into being. So in these 275 actions happening around the U.S today and tomorrow organized by @mvmnt4blklives SOURCE YOUR JOY, HIGHLIGHT OUR JOY. DANCE, SING, TURN UP FOR FREEDOM. IT IS OURS TO CLAIM!
For white folks and orgs on this day, return the unjust "REPARITIONS" given to your enslaver ancestors that built your resource ( the loan/gift your daddy gave you for that first house or the college tuition they paid in full, the Trust from whence you or your foundation gives "charitable donations or grants)" yup open up that ill-gotten bounty and return it without reports or onerous demands to the multitude of humans it was stolen from. you are welcome to include me at venmo @sonyareneetaylor or become a patreon @sonyareneetaylor . your soul will feel lighter. That karmic debt is weighing you down. you can also give to @thebodyisnotanapology

Donald Trump has marshalled the forces of white supremacy to stoke the flames of racist violence in our country.

As we took to the streets to protest against the rampant scourge of police violence, Trump gave elected officials around the country the green light to “dominate” us with those same out-of-control police forces. He took the extreme step of using the military to face off against civilians. He gassed us for a photo-op. His recent declaration, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts,” has put every protestor at risk.

He abandoned the basic duties of the executive office during a pandemic. We have lost our jobs and livelihoods. Over 100,000 people in this country have died needlessly.
This did not have to happen.

Now that it has, we must act. There are more of us fighting for a better future than those who would keep that future at bay.

How many “red lines” must be crossed? How many more must suffer and die before we hold this President accountable?

We reject a politics of fear and white supremacy. We reject the normalization of dangerously divisive and racist leadership. We reject the notion that Black people and marginalized communities must bear the disproportionate impact of this failed experiment, while waiting for inadequate alternatives to emerge.

Today, we speak in one voice, in the names of those we have lost and the futures of those who would come after us. This, too, is democracy.

Donald Trump must resign.

  • I AM SO FUCKING PROUD TO LIVE IN BULL CITY!! Durham Beyond Policing, Durham Workers Assembly, and SO many others turned out and turned up right in front of the police station and made this beautiful piece of art.
We danced, marched, ate food, took care of each other, and committed to continue showing up for Black Lives, Black Futures and a world where All Black Life is honored.
We especially honor the generations of organizers who brought us to this moment and as I saw on a protest sign, "we didn't come this far just to come this far." So. Here. We. Go.
#DurhamCityCouncil are you listening? Or are you waiting for a piece of art on your block too?? [An overhead shot taken by a drone above the street in front of the police headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. Large yellow letters painted across the whole block spell DEFUND followed by a yellow arrow pointing towards the building]

  • I grew up in San Antonio, TX and celebrated #juneteenth often with my dad’s side of the family. I thought everyone celebrated this day because it was normal for us. If you aren’t familiar with the holiday, please scroll to read more about it as it is starting to “trend” in light of #BlackLivesMatter and the upcoming rally that President Trump had planned on 6/19. These points were taken from a @mental_floss article that is linked in my bio if you would like to read more. And the video included is from @mvmnt4blklives to learn more. #SixNineteen #blm #amplifymelanatedvoices

  • My God, we are a beautiful people wrapped softly but firmly in a blanket of joy & pain. We will not bow, we will not concede. We will not let our culture continue be stolen by those that cause, then capitalize off the fire they ignited. We dance collectively, smoothly letting the stories of those who came before us be told with every two step, slide, shuffle, and pop & lock. We wear the faces of our great grandmothers & grandfathers who prayed over our survival and armed us for this battle. They knew this day would come. My God my God, we are indeed a beautiful people. #juneteenth

The chant heard in this video is known in South Africa as the Toyi Toyi, popularized during the anti-apartheid freedom movement. It is a call to formation and is still used to project power on the frontlines by activists facing armed militarized resistance. @mvmnt4blklives #juneteenth

  • This Friday we're joining forces with Shutdown DC, 350 DC, and Extinction Rebellion DC to form a block of Climate Voices for Black Lives. Black Lives Matter DC is organizing a massive action on Friday evening and they’ve asked our community to participate. During this pivotal time, it’s extremely important for the climate justice movement to show up for Black lives. Let’s be clear: There is no climate justice without racial justice.

At 5pm sharp on Friday 6/19 we will meet at 18th St. NW and California St. NW in Adams Morgan, in front of the Marie Reed Recreation Center. We will march down to Black Lives Matter Plaza (across from the White House), where we will meet up with other "feeder" marches. At around 8pm, BLM DC will lead us all on a massive march through the nation’s capital.
Wear a mask, come with a friend, bring water (ideally in a refillable water bottle!), and be prepared to follow the leadership of the Black organizers who are leading the fight in this historic moment. #Juneteenth #SixNineteen
