  • What are the 5 principles of yin yoga?
โ €
1) Time: the time spent in each pose, but also the overall time we've practiced yin yoga
โ €
2) Stillness: we invite stillness into all 5 dimensions of the body during each pose with meditation and focusโ €
โ €
3) Relaxation: when our muscles are relaxed, our mind is relaxed. We use propsfor support and to keep our body relaxed as we go deeper into the pose
โ €
4) Edge of comfort: this is the space between comfort and discomfort - here, we feel no pain but sensation, and are able to connect and feel into all dimensions of the body
โ €
5) Breath: with consious, deep breath reaching every space of our body, we can connect to the present and notice subtle changes as we move deeper throught the pose. Breath is a great indicator of when to go a little deeper or to back off of a pose!โ €โ €โ €โ €

I work with new yogis because I understand what itโ€™s like to feel lost in what yoga โ€œshouldโ€ be ๐Ÿค”

When youโ€™re new to the yoga scene itโ€™s easy to feel like you need to do it right and fit in.

Does that mean you need to move to a shack in the woods with animal friends surrounding you as you drink kombucha in love & light?โœจ

Hell no (unless thatโ€™s your jam).

Your yoga practice is what YOU make it.

Yoga does not require you to:
โŒ Eat strictly raw vegan
โŒ Only wear flowy pants & mala beads
โŒ Meditate on a mountain for 8 hours every day

If it doesnโ€™t speak to your authentic truth, then you donโ€™t need it!

Yoga has one purpose: 
โœ… To still your mind and connect with your true self

Thatโ€™s it! Easy peasy.

Ever since I started practicing yoga, it inspired me to practice mindful movement in other areas of my daily life. In a dance class, going outside for a hike, walking through the aisles of a grocery store or even at work. This growing awareness has taken my yoga practice beyond the mat. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
Especially in the middle of a pandemic, we find ourselves sitting at home for longer durations, going days without really moving our bodies, or doing activities that donโ€™t really connect our body and mind together. I know it IS hard, I certainly lack motivation sometimes too! But you donโ€™t need to do a HIIT workout on youtube or take a yoga class online to move your body. All you need is intention, attention and an open-minded attitude to start. โฃโฃ

โฌ‡๏ธ Here are some ways I encourage you to explore mindful movement at home to boost your well-being. โฃโฃ

Feel your feet! Notice how your feet move with every step. Activate all those little tiny muscles in your feet. They have a special purpose to get you from one place to the next and they bear the entire weight of your body. If you have a grassy area nearby, go outside and walk on the grass. Let your body connect with mama earth.โฃโฃ

Put on some music and dance! I do this all the time in my living room with my dog, Leo lol. Sometimes itโ€™s salsa music or some slow acoustic to sway to. Either way we dance it out, donโ€™t give a damn of how we look and instead pay attention to how it feels in our body and mind.โฃโฃ

Do a mental body scan from head to toe the next time you are moving around in the kitchen and preparing a meal. Making us more aware of little actions that allow us to complete larger tasks. โฃโฃ

Lotus pose demands a lot from the flexibility in our lower body. Starting slow and building up to a full lotus is key to preventing injury. Try an easy cross-legged pose first and then transition to half lotus. As your muscles begin to relax over time, getting into a full lotus will become a lot easier and you will start to experience some of these benefits!โฃโฃ
