We had tickets to the Hella Mega Tour in November which included seeing Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer!! So good! But it has now been cancelled due to COVID. I was hoping that it would be rescheduled but no such luck!!
It’s always a little sad when something you are looking forward to gets cancelled. But on the plus side thats $434 back into my savings and that little bit closer to our 50k goal 🤑🤑🤑
I’m in the process of negotiating an offer from a seller who looks like he wants to break even on his home which he owned for one year.... anyways here’s what my research taught me: Solar panels don’t really add value to the property. In most cases, agents have experienced headaches because the panels are usually financed with enforceable contracts. Unless the buyer has a desire for panels, a reasonable buyer would not pay extra for it. The seller received the tax credit already and the buyer is assuming payment for a system that is older and with less warranty coverage for the same monthly payment.
Sinking Funds Update!
This month I started adding money to my new sinking funds, as well as to my 20K Challenge fund. I’ll continue to do this as long as I have a regular paycheck coming in.
20K Challenge - My goal is to save $500 a month until I reach $20K.
Car Maintenance - $40 a month, ongoing.
Christmas - $170 a month until I reach $850
B’s Birthday - $100 a month until I reach $700
2021 Vacation - $200 a month until I reach $2,200.
I also set up a new sinking fund that I’ll start adding to next month: Thanksgiving Sales (I have my eye on a couple of treats 😊). It’s currently at $0, but I’d like to save a couple of hundred in time for cyber monday.
My House Savings & Emergency Fund mainly live at my b&m bank, although I have some here as well. I’m currently growing my emergency fund so that it’ll cover 6 months of expenses. Just in case things go south.
What are you guys saving for? Do you use sinking funds for your larger expenses?
Trying to soak in the last days of summer while we can! While I often want to buy everything I think of for this little guy, often he’s happier playing with anything that’s not a toy 😆. Rocks, boxes, dirt, anything in drawers he’s not supposed to go in... you get the gist ;). Anyway these are things I have to remind myself before I try to buy anything new for him 🙃

Big things are coming!
Watch this space...
Down to our last 4 debts before we are DEBT FREE!!!!!!!!
Granted it will probably take us another 2 1/2 years (already been on this #debtfreejourney since January 2018) but that is ok because we know that in a few short years we can start investing in our future instead of cleaning up our past mistakes.
We plan off paying off our appliance debt tomorrow but it’s been a loooooong while since I have listed out our current debt situation.
So here it is in all its glory.
We have paid off over $61,000 so far so we are so close to the halfway mark.
Almost to the summit of this mountain.

My sweet sunshine girl has singlehandedly used up both the ends of our HSA and our entire FSA this summer (knee stitches and broken arm...). But I love her and would give my own flesh and blood to keep her well.
How do you talk to your children about kid-related expenses (because she does know this is stretching us) without putting any of that pressure and guilt on them?
This has been a good opportunity for us to also have conversations with each other and our kiddos about the cost of healthcare in America and our opinion that #healthcareisahumanright. We’ve also talked about the importance of having money set aside for emergencies and I cannot even begin to explain how good it feels to know that we will actually be able to afford this, even if it does drain a few accounts!
A few years ago this same girly needed a eye procedure (did you know shards of metal are airborne in Phoenix... yay) and I fell into such despair over the finances of it. That was a dark time and what really got me plugged into the #debtfreecommunity. Some days this #budgetlife can be simultaneously stressful and underwhelming, but times like this when we can see progress and change really happening the hard work feels worth it!

Don't be too excited, it was only $43 extra 😂 but it's something. Not going to lie, I contemplated not sending it and either saving it or buying some things for my new place...but I didn't!!
With my supervisor giving the 'ok' for extra hours this school year (actually he suggested it) I'm really hopeful I won't have to continue pausing my debt payoff.
Hopefully this is the start of bigger things.

• SAVING MORE THAN SPENDING 🤩
I posted percentages for each month a few days ago. But, I’m a visual person! I love to SEE what those savings look like compared to my income. So I wanted to make this graph.
Before January, I’d spend more than I made. And, I certainly wasn’t saving AT ALL.
I’m saying that before age 27, I’d never saved. I made money and spent it (responsibly and irresponsibly) in that same month.
I’m extremely proud of these past few months. I do regret not doing more sooner. But, there’s also no point in being mad at myself. I’m glad I learned the lesson. I’m grateful to be in a position to grow and learn. And, I’m excited to do better each day. 👊🏼
• SMALL STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION •
I keep having to remind myself that small steps are better than no steps. This month we haven't made huge overpayment to our debts, we've just made odd payments here and there and that's okay. Its okay to not be able to pay hundreds off each month, however we are still making huge progress even If it doesn't feel like it on the daily 🙃

𝗜'𝗠 𝗡𝗢 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬. 𝗜 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 𝗠𝗬 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬.
If anyone is starting on their financial journey, learning is a must. For me, I had to change the way I viewed money before I could learn how to manage it. I needed to change how I viewed the term “rich”, “wealthy”, etc. No matter what tools I was given, I wouldn’t have been able to follow through until I learned what wealth truly meant and what my “why” was. Once I had a clear view of what and who I could become, everything came together. And these are the top 3 books that got me there:
𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐇 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐎𝐍 𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐋
This book came about after Andrew Carnegie tasked Napoleon Hill with writing a book on how people succeed. Overall, he talks about how desire, belief, action, and persistence help get you to where you want to be. Although there are a few stories that are a little out there or may be taken differently, I think the general message of needing to change your mindset to be successful can be applied to any situation.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐇 𝐛𝐲 𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄 𝐃. 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒
If you’ve read “The Secret”, I’m sure you have heard of this book. Although I may not agree with everything, there were insights and principles he discussed that had me thinking. That thinking led me to change how I viewed the journey to success and wealth.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐗𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐑 𝐛𝐲 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐒 𝐉. 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐋𝐄𝐘
This is the book that helped me realize I don’t need anything materialistic that is typically associated with being “rich”. I learned through the author’s research, many people who are said to be well off due to being high income earners or seem like they have a luxurious lifestyle, may not actually be wealthy. This book changed how I viewed wealth and what being a person with wealth actually meant.
In general, when it comes to things I read or hear, I take information that has impacted me and use it. The bits that don’t, I pay no attention to and move on. So even though these books may not be perfect, I still received amazing lessons from.

Reposting from my story yesterday.
There's huge privilege in money. The privileges I was born with allow me to pursue my financial journey today.
I feel the IG FI community is pretty diverse—my circles include many women and BIPOC-run accounts—but this subset does not necessarily represent the broader finance community, and more importantly, what wealth looks like in the real world.
Until there is equitable opportunity and representation for all people, there's no justice in money. 🙅🏻♀️

(also I meant to type empathetic** but turns out empathic works too? 😅)
Yes, it’s true...
I relapsed...again. A loved one lost her mother to cancer and without a second thought I ran out to Pandora to grab her a gift. Well, this store is in the mall and I clearly forgot why I never go😖.
My self-control was no match for those sales! I watched my little sister prance into every store and I followed suit 😅.
But I’m not beating myself up and here’s why:
- I’ve learned that I need to be patient and allow myself grace. It’s not easy to say no all the time.
- I contribute to a miscellaneous fund each paycheck.
- This paycheck was my third and based on how I budget it was considered “extra.”
- Last but not least, I understand that I am flesh and not some perfect immortal God.
This is exactly why I say to never deprive yourself, because once you feel the joy of swiping it’s so addicting! I’ve been too strict with my budget in order to reach my goal of debt freedom this year and this was the perfect lesson to loosen up.
This upcoming paycheck I will have to lower personal funds and possibly my extra debt payment but I’ll be enjoying the scents of my new lotions until then. How do you recover from overspending?

Monday Motivation! Anyone else feeling overwhelmed on their journey? Don’t worry, we are all in this together. 🤗
I’m repeating this to myself over & over today. It’s easy to get overwhelmed during this debt free journey. I’m trying to make the best decisions for my financial future, while “adulting” during a pandemic. Im doing the best I can & I need to remember that! 💫 We all got this & it’s okay to feel emotional at times. Just remember to take time for you to breathe in the positives & breathe out the negatives!! 🙌🏽
I hope you’re all having a beautiful day! ♥️

Good news! Another card is offering a higher bonus for a limited-time. This time it’s the United Explorer Card. The offer is up from 40,000 points to 60,000 points after spending $3,000 in 3 months (good till 9/30). The card comes with two United Club Passes, which give you access to United airport lounges, and a statement credit for Global Entry/TSA Precheck. What’s even better is the annual fee is waived the first year so you get all that for free! If you often fly United or live near a United hub airport then this could be a great card for you.
My mom has had this card for years. I had it and then downgraded to the United Travelbank card the following year so I could avoid the annual fee. Mitch has it right now, he signed up during the last 60k offer.
In the past I’ve used my United miles to fly roundtrip in business class to Athens...which was awesome. I’ve also used my United miles to fly to Maui. My mom has used a lot of United miles over the years, usually for international business class flights. She lives in Denver which is a United hub so that is often her go to airline.
We have a whole blog post about the United cards. If you’d like to check that out let me know and I’ll send you a DM. You can find a link to this card in our bio. Thanks!
Our daughters sinking fund
The other day we went to Michaels and our daughter saw this savings picture frame. She decided she wanted it so she can start a new sinking fund for a car. They grow up so fast!
We have a car named Coco and we decided to “sell” it to her when she’s old enough to drive. I say “sell” bc that money is going back into a savings we have built for her (but she doesn’t know that lol). Our daughter has her $1000 emergency fund already. She saved money from babysitting. So we have confidence she will save enough for her car.
Anywho, we went over the basics of maintaining a car, the cost of gas, tickets, etc. We plan to pay for everything except for her gas and maintenance. She will be in charge of that part. We believe that when your teens have skin in the game they care for their things a lot more. Some people may not agree w our method, but we feel this is a great opportunity to learn responsibility.
How are you handing teens and cars? Did your parents give you a car when you were a teen? Would love to know.
Graduating law school was such a happy time in my life! I had a new baby, a handsome hubby, and some exciting job opportunities lined up. I felt on top of the 🌎!
That is, until I sat down and took a look at my student loan balance. Interest had accrued during school and it was a balance that left me feeling 🤢.
We checked on my hubby’s student loans and we were completely sticker shocked. I didn’t sleep a wink that night, just tossed and turned and mulled over how we were going to pay off the balance that at the time was roughly $600k.
We’ve worked really hard to pay off over $300k in the last 3ish years. All while acquiring a dental practice, launching an app (almost!!) and most recently adding newborn twins to the mix 🤪
It hasn’t been easy but I’m sharing actionable steps you can take to pay off your student loans fast, specifically what we did to pay off the first $200k in 2 years! To see how we did it and what you can do, visit the link in profile.
While we were saving to pay cash for my new car...
it seemed like EVERYONE we knew was getting new cars. (It’s easy to notice all of the people who already have what you’re working so hard for.)
we said no to a lot of things in order to save more - vacations, home updates, little things.
my car was by far the oldest in the preschool pick-up line.
the stereo system broke so I just had to turn my phone as loud as it could go and listen that way.
we maintained my old car with oil changes and other routine upkeep to increase the chances it would keep going until we had enough saved.
we got impatient and considered a 50% down payment. But we decided to stay the course.
there were a few times we thought my old car would die but miraculously it didn’t.
It was worth the wait.
Walking into a dealership and writing a check for the car we had researched and hand picked? Never having a car payment again?
Totally worth it. And if we can do it, you can do it too!

Hi! I’m Meg and I live in MA with my hubby. This picture is from our trip to Florida over February vacation earlier this year. ⠀
I am in my mid 30s; I’m a teacher with chronic pain who is also on the IVF journey. ⠀
I have always been interested in budgeting and money and numbers and personal finance. When I stumbled across the debt free community I had student loans which I figured was normal. Then I unexpectedly needed a new car and suddenly our debt jumped to almost $33,000. ⠀
I’ll never forget the precise feeling I had thinking about how long I would be making monthly payments. I decided to start paying down this debt and did so over the course of 15 months. ⠀
We’re debt free now other than the mortgage. Since paying off our debt we are now working on maxing out retirement vehicles like our Roth IRAs and my husband’s 401k. I contribute to my teacher retirement and also to a 403b. In addition, I made a super lofty goal this year of earning $100,000. I truthfully don’t think I’ll come close but I’m still glad I gave myself a challenge! ⠀
We have put some money into our home during this pandemic. When we purchased our house three years ago, every square inch of it needed improvements. We really enjoy doing this work and it’s been a really memorable three years transforming our home. ⠀
We also completed Baby Step 3 before Baby Step 2. Personal preference, but I wanted a large emergency fund all along.
There are so many great accounts and people in the #debtfreecommunity and I’m still pretty grateful I came across this community two years ago 🧡⠀
Double check your envelopes
The other day I was going through all the envelopes I’ve used in the past bc I was looking for a receipt. To my surprise I found money in my beauty envelope! How did I miss that? Thank goodness we save our envelopes. After that I checked everything else (secretly hoping I’d find more money 😝). Moral of the story, always double check your cash envelopes.
Lastly, I wanted to say hello to all the new friends we have. Thank you all for being part of our journey 💕
Financial freedom is real but it's also kinda weird too. It's strange because for years while we were climbing our way out of debt and saving all we could we made so many sacrifices. And so many folks in our real life thought we were hard up or broke or "on your ______" as one friend so kindly told us. 😳 But then as soon as we paid off the house everyone believed we had become millionaires over night! They started making comments on how we were "money bags" and they started thinking that Pat suddenly started earning six figures a year....uh no. He in fact only makes a little more than $2,000 a year more than what he made while we were on the debt-free journey. It's crazy to me how we see folks who are working hard to achieve financial freedom as broke or struggling but then the moment they achieve that freedom they were fighting for we seem to get upset that we "can't have that". Friend, I'm here to tell you that if two kids from divorced blue collar families can do it so can you. Yes, sacrifices suck but so does having your debit card declined. Achieving financial freedom isn't glamorous but its 1000% worth it.

I have not been as active as I’d like to be over here on a budget bitch!! Life has been moving so fast!
I am currently in the final round interviews for two different positions with MY DREAM COMPANY you guys!!! I’m so stoked for this opportunity, but it would mean relocating from Phoenix to LA! 🙀
This would have huge implications on my budget/finances! According to Glassdoor the average salary for the positions I’m interviewing for is $30K+ more per year than what I am currently making!
I would, however, need to consider the costs to break my lease, break my contract at my current job (more on that later), and to physically relocate. Not to mention CA state income tax, higher cost of living and rent....
Although I don’t have an offer yet, I feel very optimistic about this opportunity and feel like it is in better alignment with my career goals. Plus it’s just a badass company with a mission that I am 100% behind. I could prob do without the LA traffic though 😂
Where is my SoCal #DFC??⬇️
