Edinburgh Gang Show 2019
That the Parliament celebrates the long-standing annual tradition of the Gang Show in Edinburgh, when over 250 young people from Scouting and Girlguiding appear at the King’s Theatre with their spectacular production, the 60th Edinburgh Gang Show; understands that on 14 November 1960 the first Edinburgh Gang Show was performed at the theatre, and that for nearly sixty years young people from Scouting and Girlguiding in Scotland’s capital have taken part, entertaining audiences of thousands; notes that the production gives young people the opportunity to perform in one of the city’s much-loved theatres and, through their participation, the young people gain skills for life; recognises that the Gang Show is a major part of the Scouting and Girlguiding programme and that, with the enthusiasm, commitment and ongoing support from its followers, there will be show-stopping musical numbers, fabulous choreography, stunning individual performances and comedy routines, and wishes all concerned in the production, including the support behind the scenes by many adult volunteers, every success.

Supported by: Miles Briggs, Alexander Stewart, Edward Mountain, Richard Lyle, Annie Wells, Maurice Corry, Jamie Greene, Bill Kidd, Peter Chapman

  • Friday night at the King’s during Gang Show week is electric! What an amazing show with over 1,000 in the audience.

Our Director Andy Johnston was presented with a 40 Year Service Award by Alan Hunter tonight. When Andy joined the Gang Show in 1980 Ralph Reader CBE visited the show as we were celebrating our 21st birthday that year. After the show Andy met ‘Mr Gang Show’ and got his autograph.
The magic of meeting Ralph on the stage of the King’s inspired Andy to come back the year after and do another Gang Show and then another and so on. Over the years Andy became friends with many people connected to Gang Shows up and down the country particularly developing a close friendship with the late John Stiles, a member of the original London Gang Show and Ralph Reader’s accompanist. In 1988 Andy was part of the Edinburgh Gang that played at the world-famous London Palladium, but he rarely mentions it!
After many years in the cast Andy worked backstage for a few years before joining the Production Team and in 2003 Gordon Blackburn appointed Andy to be his successor as Director of the Edinburgh Gang Show. He has since become the longest serving Director of the show.

Andy has taken Ralph’s unique format for Gang Show and brought it completely up to date. The show is still about young people from Scouts and Girlguiding putting on a show and his ability to devise, write and produce the show year on year and at the same time develop a new generation of Gang Show production team is remarkable.

It seems fitting that he joined in a celebration year and receives this long service award in another celebration year.
Andy, the Gang salute you - congratulations on 40 Glorious Gang Shows!

Chief Executive, Capital Theatres

To all the performers, creative team, technicians and everyone involved in the Gang Show – congratulations to all on 60 glorious years of the Gang Show!

It is always a delight to welcome the Gang Show to the King’s – it’s an extremely popular production in the King’s calendar and an important part of our year, in the build-up to Christmas.

The energy and professionalism of the creative team and all the performers is remarkable. With great songs from the shows, terrific choreography, humour and exceptional solo performances, there is always something to enjoy and to excite the audiences who have been attending in huge numbers for six decades. Longevity that very few productions can equal.

I hope that you have a wonderful 60th celebration and that the Gang Show will be at the King’s for many years to come.

  • Wow! Another amazing Gang Show tonight.
We were delighted to have in the audience the Deputy Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, Cllr Joan Griffiths, and Regional Commissioner for South East Scotland Scouts Margery Naylor and County Commissioners for Girlguiding Edinburgh Susan Brown and Emma Lyon as well as District Commissioners and Division Commissioners.

The Commissioner's Reception is an opportunity for Scouting and Girlguiding to say thank you to all our adult volunteers.

Diane Marshall and Susan Brown spoke of the contribution that our volunteers give to the show.

What a great night!

  • Happy Birthday to our number one fan in the WORLD Mr.Brian Barrett - the next time he sees the show will be his 60th time in the Jungle. Yes, you read that correctly... SIXTY times. He's seen every cast onboard the Norwegian Escape from the original cast in April 2018 to our current cast onboard the Norwegian Escape (ES4.0), who surprised him with a birthday cake and invited him into the jungle to sing happy birthday (and of course for a cheeky pre-show pint 🤫). Cheers, Brian! Here's to the next 60 😜🍻 How many times have you seen the show, we would love to know! 🤩
